I need help too! I have been using Ubuntu for five years now on my Dell PC. at home. I've always plugged the wire into the modem or hub (the little black box with 3 blue lights on it sent to me British Telecom). Now I've bought a new laptop to use for my business. I need Windows 7 to run a Primera label Printer which is impossible to do in Ubuntu, so I've "dual booted" it to run Windows 7, for those applications that cannot run any other way, and Ubuntu o10.4 LTS for everything else. The laptop has a built in WiFi connection and can detect my home hub and other WiFi networks. However, it cannot detect wired connections when I plug in the cable for work. A telephone service with WiFi is too expensive for our new business (we're coffee roasters). Windows 7 can detect both wired and unwired connections, but I don't want to use Windows on the internet. I want to disable internet use in Windows and use Ubuntu. But I cannot, because it cannot detect the wired connection. I need the laptop to detect BOTH WIRED and UNWIRED conections.

How can I teach Ubuntu to read both connection types dependant on what's plugged in?
