why cant i connect to the internet

using ubuntu9.10, cant connect to internet, using bsnl braoad band. what all details should be filled during connection . i just fill username and password to connect

ifconfig -a should show your interfaces and whether it/they have IP address.
lshw -C network should provide more information about interfaces, their drivers, and aliases.
Is networking... working?

I think this is the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/network-manager/+bug/394218 in network manager..
there is a solution mentioned at the end.
