b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found + running old kernel from Linux Mint 7 -> BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 01) wireless controller not working on Acer Aspire 9410 in Linux Mint 7
I have just newly install my first Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop Acer Aspire 9410
I have complete install/update all package
My wireless network is working on Windows but refuses to work on Ubuntu
I have already tried to follow the troubleshooting instruction.
I did the recognition test and the Network shows as being ''DISABLE''
With this result troubleshooting only bring me back to step 5.2.1 so what next?
The router is a Linksys 2.4 GHz 802.11g, but it should work with Ubuntu because I was able to connect an other laptop with the same OS
Please help me !!!
What to do next

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https:/

You told us everything except what wifi adapter you use, the router will obey ISO standards so is moot. So is the fact that it works in windows
Can you give the output of:
sudo lshw -C network
You may also want to connect to a wired connection and get fully updated

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread
Regards,
Mark

There are 2 separate issues with your Linux install:
1) you are NOT running the kernel from Ubuntu 9.10, but the old kernel from Linux Mint 7 -> so you need to install the current kernel version 2.6.31-15 by installing this package: linux-image-
2) the firmware for your Broadcom wireless chipset BCM4311 has not been installed yet using a wired Internet connection.
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
The error "b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found or load failed" means that b43-fwcutter is not installed yet on your pc. And that means that the Broadcom firmware for your wireless card is not loaded or installed yet.
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following commands into the Linux Terminal. Press <enter> after each command.
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install b43-fwcutter
sudo aptitude install linux-headers-
sudo aptitude install linux-image-
b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working wired Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to locate it and install it.
The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.
After installing b43-fwcutter, please reboot and then retest wireless.
I have seen this Broadcom error message so many times before. The reason why the Broadcom wireless driver does not work out-of-the-box in Ubuntu , is because the firmware for your wireless card is proprietary.
The firmware files for your wireless card are not allowed to be included as part of the default Ubuntu install, because it is non-free software.

I removed Ubuntu and tried Linux Mint but was having the same wireless connection problem, so waiting for the solution to my problem I went in Control Center (Hardware drivers) and I saw that the wireless drivers were not activated, I tried one did not work, tried the secong and behold it connected.
Thank you for the help
