How to get wifi (intel pro/wireless 3945) working again?

Asked by Duncan Lithgow

I've got an HP Pavilion dv8220ea (nice machine, bit noisy) which has an Intel PRO/wireless 3945abg wireless card. Back when I bought this machine the driver (ipw3945) was unstable, now the new driver (iwl3945) just doesn't work (it didn't in Jaunty and still doesn't).

Is there anything I can do that doesn't require custom kernels and such? I'm not new to Ubuntu, but this has stumped me...

@Mark: The connection I have control over is listed as Cell 02 called 'kiwi_house2'. For now this has no security features active. I thought this might help us diagnose the problem more easily.

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -C usb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep iwl; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

Your wireless cards seems to work fine, as it has detected 3 wireless access points. If you cannot connect to your wireless access point using NetworkManager, first try installing and using wicd instead.

If you cannot get a stable wireless connection using wicd, your pc might be experiencing this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/291685

In that case, I would recommend installing the newest version of the compat-wireless stack

To install wicd, run these commands:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wicd

To install the newest compat-wireless stack, run these commands:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-karmic linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic

Then reboot and retest wireless.

Wicd simply says 'Connection Failed: Unable to Get IP Address' after trying for a while. Here's the same out put as before, but now using wicd, still using iwl3945

Try installing the newest compat-wireless stack, as I already suggested.

I've already done that. It didn't _seem_ to make any difference. I've tested my network with another laptop to be sure, and the other machine has no trouble connecting. Likewise I can connect from WindowsXP without any trouble.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Duncan Lithgow for more information if necessary.
