D-link wireless card not recognized in Compaq SR1000V Desktop

Asked by chwdhw

I just put Ubuntu on my Compaq SR1000V desktop. It was previously running through a D-link DWL-G510 wireless adaptor as I don't have a phone jack in that room. When I switched to Ubuntu, it no longer recognized the adaptor and so I have no internet there. Router still working fine on my laptop here. I removed and reinstalled the adaptor to see if that would do anything but to no avail. Looking around I copied the following if that is of any help. Any ideas how to get this up and going?

OK so it is a Marvell W8300 chip. DLink means very little in Linux, only the chip is what we are interested in.

Looks like you need to use ndisgtk + Dlink driver (get the driver from the dlink site and match the archtecture of XP to match your installed arch (if you are using 64bit ubunt, get 64bit XP wifi drivers))

It looks like D link doesn't have a linux driver for the DWL-G510. I looked up a listing on the 520 but they are using the Atheros chip. I'm searching for a driver somewhere but it doesn't look good

You want thewindows driver for your architecture and you will need to install ndisgtk from the install CD or the repos

You can then give ndisgtk the .inf and .sys file from the driver and it will make the device work

I downloaded ndisgtk_0.3-1_all.deb and brought it over to that computer but when I try to open it it just says
error:dependancy is not satifiable:ndiswrapper-utils

I've tried sudo apt-get install ndisgtk and it says

reading package list...done
building dependancy tree
reading state information...done
E: couldn't find package ndisgtk

Then you need the deb file for ndiswrapper-utils too

You will get this a lot, its far easier to connect to a wired connection and install it, you can also get updates which will make things a lot nicer

I give up. I bought the bullet and went to best buy and got a Belking F5D7050 wireless adaptor. installed the driver, plugged it in and I was online in less than 2 minutes. Thanks for all the help though.
