eth2 Failed to read scan data : Invalid argument -> BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 01) wireless controller cannot detect any wireless networks on Dell inspiron E1505 in Ubuntu 9.10 -> wireless adapter is physically turned off by physical killswitch

Asked by Dennis Young on 2009-11-14

I have installed ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell inspirion E1505 and cannot get the WIFI working. I've tried the prop drivers and ndiswrapper 1.55 for the dell windows drivers. It still won't work. I've read most questions on the bcm4311 card but none of those seem to work. When installing the ndiswrapper I get several error 2 messages. Any other ideas?
thanks,
Dennis

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -C usb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep iwl; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

This is a continual problem with the Broadcom wireless thingies - you can't access a wireless network without the drivers, but the drivers are only (IIRC) available online!

If you are able to, connect your box to the router using a physical ethernet cable, or use a mobile broadband dongle (in each case, Ubuntu should guide you through any setup required)

Then, if all goes well, you can install the firmware for the BCM43xx. In terminal:

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

This will install an application, which will in turn download and extract the firmware required for the Broadcom wireless thingie.

Hi Dennis,

The output you sent us - eth2 Failed to read scan data : Invalid argument - seems to indicate that your wireless adapter is physically switched off.

Please press the FN-F2 key combination once to see if you can then detect wireless networks. If FN-F2 does not work, simply try pressing F2 instead. Right after you try the FN-F2 combination, run the following command to see if it detects wireless networks:

sudo iwlist scanning

Hope this helps,

Mark
