b43-phy0 ERROR: FOUND UNSUPPORTED PHY (Analog 6, Type 5, Revision 1) -> Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01) not working on Dell Vostro 1520 in Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by jwesleycooper

[windows installer - Ubuntu 9.10] Neither gnome-nettool nor wicd are detecting any wireless networks on Dell Vostro 1520

Due to a corrupted GRUB bootloader, I'd decided to wait until now to install Ubuntu 9.20 using the windows installer from XP, but now I'm once again unable to use my wireless networks. I've retried the steps from the question "BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01) wireless controller seems to work fine and detects 5 wireless networks using Dell Vostro 1520 in Ubuntu 9.04", which I'd previously asked on here; but wicd isn't working either, even after a cold reboot! Here's what I'm currently getting:

jwesleycooper@ubuntu:~$ sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -C usb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep iwl; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

 * Reconfiguring network interfaces... [ OK ]

I also find it rather confusing that though 9.10 supposedly already supports my wireless chip, at least according to your documentation, it apparently doesn't; so please tell me how on Earth I can fix this.

PS: I have a .tar file for a Linux version of Avira's AntiVir Personal Antivirus; which I want to install ASAP, but I can't find any instructions whatsoever for how to do such (at least not any that actually work), so where can I find such instructions?

For future reference, in case anyone has issues with the BCM4312 wireless network controller in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala):

Please first try the solution from Tom Haddon from this location:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/385293

If that does not help, please try the solution from Ayuthia from this location:

Is there any way to do this without having to burn a CD image? And I should also note that I used the wubi.exe WinXP installer, so I'm currently using boot.ini, and not grub... so how does this affect the process for me?

You only need a wired internet connection in Ubuntu to be able to try all the solutions suggested in this thread. You do not need to burn another CD image, if you have already installed Ubuntu.

Please skip the following suggestion, as it is apparently unclear for some people:

Hey guys! New to Ubuntu - been playing with it for the past few days... and I'm currently dual booting with Windows 7 - running on 2 separate partitions. I've managed to kill the last 2 installs of ubuntu - just from playing around and trying things out... I love the freedom Linux Distro's give... I definitely say that when I have enough knowledge and can find my way around Linux the way I do Windows I'll be a Linux only guy... I wanna get into it in a big way!

ANYWAY! My laptop is a
HP DV6 1340sa
2.4 Dual Core 2Duo
4GB RAM
Intel Mobile 4 Chip
Broadcom BCM4312 (14e4:4315) Rev01

This WLAN card was the problem for me... I was reading and testing and reading n testing and at the minute the setup I have is working.

NOTE: Connect an ethernet cable (Network cable from your laptop straight into Your router/modem)

Heres what I done... From a fresh install of ubuntu... install ALL updates from "System>Administration>Update Manager

Install via "System>Administration>Synaptics Package Manager" AND ONLY The listed below...

1. bcmwl-kernel-source (Version) 5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu5
2. b43-FWCutter (Version) 1:013-2
3. bcmwl-modaliases (Version) 5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu5

Ignore what the popups say from the "Additional Hardware" app in "System>Administration>Additional Hardware" Just install the packages I listed from Synaptics.

I had the package "firmware-b43-lpphy-installer (Version) 4.174.64.19-4 and I removed it (didn't select COMPLETELY REMOVE) whats the difference?

REBOOTED! And it worked fine... I had this before with a few of the other fixes. Usually after a second reboot I would be back to square one... either the WLan not being detected or I could see the wireless networks but when I tried to connect it would try for a few minutes and come back asking for the password again or with WICD it stated "bad password".

I'm going to post this up now as I've rebooted 3 times and still working dead on! Going to try and complete shutdown...have a cup of coffee and give it a blast again!

Hope this at least helps someone - and bare in mind.... I'm a complete Ubuntu noob! but with my wlan working now I'm gonna put the work in :) Love the freedom!

Good luck You guys... will keep You's posted if its still working after a shutdown...

Update:

Everything seems to be working fine :)

However I ran the "lshw" command in terminal - it said the logical name for my WLAN is "eth1" ?? Will this cause problems?

Heres the output for both devices:
