I cannot get wifi to work on ubuntu 9.10

I am not computer literate at all so i dont really know what to try. But I am new to ubuntu and I have wireless through at&t. It works on windows but I am trying ubuntu and I cant connect. My wireless connection does not even show up under connections. Can any one help? Keep in mind that I really dont know a thing about computers.

sorry it took so long to get back to you but my daughter is sick. What i did was went to recovery mode and went to drop to root shell prompt with networking. when it was done i rebooted and then there was a icon in the top right corner that had my connection in it. so i typed my network key and it worked great.
