Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -C usb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep iwl; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

I cannot install the b43-fwcutter or firmware correctly.

I go to synaptics and choose to reinstall b43-fwcutter and it seems to install it okay.

BUT. I DO NOT get any options to extract and install the firmware.

I have even reinstalled because of this But this did NOT fix i either

You got the bash error "bash: hybrid-portsrc.tar.gz: command not found"

because hybrid-portsrc.tar.gz is a FILE, not a command

Try running the following commands in your home directory (/home/<your username>):

mkdir ~/hybrid_wl
cd ~/hybrid_wl
wget http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5.10.91.9.3.tar.gz
tar xzf ~/hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5.10.91.9.3.tar.gz

After using the tar command to extract the .tar.gz file, follow the instructions here:

http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt

When they described the following:

"Setup the directory by untarring the proper tarball:

For 32 bit: hybrid-portsrc.tar.gz
For 64 bit: hybrid-portsrc-x86_64.tar.gz"

these were NOT the commands to enter in the command line, they just described what the next commands (mkdir, tar) would do...

Make sure to put sudo in front of each command in the document

http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt

So you should run these commands:

sudo make

instead of

make

Run

sudo make install

instead of

make install

Or else you will not have enough privileges to execute those commands successfully.

Hi Mark,

Compiling wireless drivers requires a certain level of expertise when using the command line. I suggest reading the following documents first before attempting to compile the wireless drivers yourself:

http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/download_main.html
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Jaunty#Handling_.28Tar.2FGZip.29_and_.28Tar.2FBzip2.29_archives

If you do not understand the commands you are typing, it will not work.

Reading these Ubuntu documents will help answer a lot of your questions about using the command line.

Kind regards,

Mark

Let's first see if the wireless driver was correctly installed:

Is it because of this.

when I run :

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

to add these:

Add the following 4 lines to the end of the blacklist.conf file

blacklist b43
blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist ndiswrapper

the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf is empty

That's because you did not follow the instructions I gave you previously, which are here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/85103

Here they are again:

In a terminal, type :

gksudo gedit /etc/modules

Add the following line to the end of the modules file:

wl

Then run the following command:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Add the following 4 lines to the end of the blacklist.conf file

blacklist b43
blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist ndiswrapper

Reboot and then test wireless.

These are the last steps of the procedure, AFTER compiling and installing the wireless drivers.

Output is still " *-network UNCLAIMED"

So the wireless drivers have not been installed yet.

From the output above, I think only these steps still need to be done:

"Then open a Terminal and run the following 2 commands to update Ubuntu 8.10 on the harddisk:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

Then download the following drivers using this command:

wget http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5.10.91.9.3.tar.gz

which come from this site:

http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

Follow these build and installation instructions carefully:

http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt

Then reboot and retest wireless.

Have I got this right, do i need to do this:

Any previous revisions of the wl driver also need to
be removed.

# lsmod | grep "b43\|ssb\|wl"

If any of these are installed, remove them:
# rmmod b43
# rmmod ssb
# rmmod wl

Have I got this command right?::

modus@modus-laptop:~/hybrid_wl$ sudo rmmod b43

Do I need to remove any more??

I am also getting these errors for these commands too ::

To blacklist these drivers and prevent them from loading in the future:
# echo "blacklist ssb" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
# echo "blacklist b43" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Here is the error :

modus@modus-laptop:~/hybrid_wl$ sudo echo "blacklist ssb" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
bash: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf: Permission denied

Not sure what to do to rectify this!!

Try these commands to install the hybrid_wl wireless drivers::

mkdir ~/hybrid_wl
cd ~/hybrid_wl
wget http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5.10.91.9.3.tar.gz
tar zxvf ~/hybrid_wl/hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5.10.91.9.3.tar.gz
sudo make clean
sudo make
sudo make install

# Ignore any warning messages during the make process.

#Then reboot and retest wireless.

# If wireless still does not work after this installation, please send us the output of the following command:

find /lib/modules -name wl.ko | xargs ls -lart

Hi Mark.

Apologies for not getting back sooner. I have been a bit busy this weekend.

I am still having issues with my wlan card.

Thank-you for all your help. but at this stage I must admit I am a bit overwhelmed by all the commands and the links to the pages to follow..

I will get there,
I am having A good look through all the posts and trying to make some sense of them

When I boot my machine it gives me the option to run ubuntu 8.10.
could this be why i am having trouble getting my wlan card working?

do I need to run slightly different commands to get my wlan card working?

I hope you can still help me. sort this out?

I think I better add that I'm using the new backtrack 4 Pre distro.

it is based on Debian and is basically ubuntu 8.10.

The Kernel i'm using is Ubuntu 8.10, Kernel 2.6.29.4

I have tried the backtrack Forum for support for this issue but I did not get much approriate help.

I spoke to one of the forums senior members and told him that I have some knowledge of Ubuntu and his response was to go to and use ubuntu forums or similar for support.

I have found your posts helpful and I have made some progress.
I do not think there is much more to do seeing as my WIFI light has turned on and my wlan is now showing in ifconfig.

BUT I still have NO wireless connectivity.

modus@modus-laptop:~$ ifconfig

Hi Mark.

I appreciate all the help and advice ,

I then proof read the README.txt and your replies. and slowly but surely I created A WLAN interface

I now have A WLAN interface as iwconfig shows below:

modus@modus-laptop:~$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

eth1 IEEE 802.11 Nickname:""
          Access Point: Not-Associated
          Link Quality:5 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 invalid crypt:0 invalid misc:0ee that my WLAN c

I also can see that my WLAN card can successfully see my Router using the sudo iwlist scanning command.

I have also used wicd network manager to create the required encryption methods to connect to my router.

But for some reason I am still not able to connect wirelessly.

I am hoping you might be able to shed a little light on this for me.

Try TEMPORARILY disabling encryption and enabling SSID broadcasting on the wireless router for testing purposes.

Make sure to set eth1 as the name of the wireless interface stored in the wicd configuration panel.

The encryption settings in wicd + encryption password set in wicd have to be the same as the encryption settings in your wireless router. So it makes testing easier if you disable encryption on the router and then try to connect via wicd.

If that does not help, please redo the following information gathering procedure and send us the output of the commands below:

I will give that A try.

Before I do.

In wicd Netowork Manager.

There is an option to choose my WPA Supplicant Driver.
The options are:

wext
hostap
madwifi
atmel
ndiswrapper
ipw
ralink legacy

which one do you suggest I choose??

I disabled encryption and I can now connect wirelessly.
So this proves that my wireless driver is installed correctly.

I am writing this whilst connected wirelessly

I am not sure what to do to correct connecting with encryption.

First try configuring WPA encryption on the wireless router and also in wicd. If that works, then try enabling WPA2 on the router and in wicd. So you need to try different encryption protocols to see which one works (best)

But I cannot help you any further, as the most important step - getting wireless to work - has now been done....
