b43-phy0 warning: You must go to http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the latest firmware (version 4) -> BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4318] (rev 02) - wlan0 No scan results - cannot connect to wireless router using acer aspire 3002wlmi in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by Eugene

I just installed ubuntu9.04 on my acer aspire 3002wlmi. I can't get my wifi working.

It doesn't show any wireless connections even though the network is up and running (I'm sure because I'm typing this message on a different computer).

Does anybody know how to get this working?

Eugene

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -C usb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep iwl; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

Mark,

Your answer says: 'The hardware RF-kill button still turns the radio physically off. Press the button to turn it on'.

If this is the switch on the front side of the laptop then it's on because the light in it is burning.

What I'll do is the following: I've installed a different driver for the wifi part but I don't know how I've done this (sounds strange but is true). So I'll re-install ubuntu 9.04 to be sure that you and I are talking the same language.

After re-installing ubuntu I'll re-send you the outcome of:
sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -C usb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep iwl; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart.

Lets start from there on to be sure that we'll get the problem solved.

Hi Eugene,

That's not what I wrote. I edited the title/subject line of this incident report to help clarify the situation.

The output ''The hardware RF-kill button still turns the radio physically off. Press the button to turn it on'

was just part of the ubuntu logs that you sent me. Your Ubuntu installation sent that debugging output, not me.

After editing the subject/title, I sent you a possible solution, which is described here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wireless-tools/+question/82495

Mark

Please try upgrading the b43 device firmware for your BCM4318 broadcom chip using these instructions:

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#fw-b43-new

Then reboot and retest wireless.

If that does not help, then try installing wicd to replace Network Manager by using the following commands:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wicd

After installing wicd, reboot and retest wireless

You can also try the old BCM4318 wireless installation procedure here:

http://elmundolibre.be/serendipity/archives/6-Ubuntu-6.06-on-an-Acer-Aspire-5024-WLMi.html

Keep in mind that the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist in Ubuntu 6.06 is now called /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf in Ubuntu 9.04

Yet another alternative is this procedure:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/AcerAspire3023

Search for the word "Networking" on that website for instructions.

Make SURE to call the created file /etc/modprobe.d/acer_acpi.conf instead of /etc/modprobe.d/acer_acpi

Or else Ubuntu 9.04 will ignore it (I think)

Hopefully one of the procedures above will help you out ;-)

I think you will have the highest chance of success with this last suggestion....

Mark,

I've tried this solution (> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/AcerAspire3023) but still no joy. The light in the wifi manager is still not burning and still not detecting any network.

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure one more time:

Regards,

Mark
