AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0013] (rev 01) not working on Packard Bell Easynote R1000 in Ubuntu 9.04 - both wired and wireless internet access not working
I have just installed the new Ubuntu 9.04, and I was previously using Windows XP. Everything works fine except I can't connect to wireless networks. Ubuntu's support at https:/
p.s. I may be looking in the wrong place, but I go to "Wireless" like Ubuntu's help says.
Thank you for any help!

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Run the following command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below into a Terminal, press enter, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Hi,
Please connect the pc to the wireless router using an ethernet cable and then follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Terminal"
Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line into the Terminal, press <enter> after each line)
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install build-essential subversion
cd ~
wget http://
tar xvf madwifi-
cd madwifi-
make
sudo make install
gksudo gedit /etc/modules
# Now add the Atheros kernel module ath_pci to the list of modules to be automatically loaded at boot by adding
ath_pci
# to the end of the /etc/modules file. (Gedit editor automatically opens)
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
# Now add the following 3 lines at the end of the /etc/modprobe.
blacklist ath5k_pci
blacklist ATL1E
blacklist ath5k
# Now you can reboot and it should work.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,
I am experiencing a similar problem with ubuntu 9.04 and wireless not working properly.
Hardware shows up as AR242x but being in reality a AR5007 Atheros adapter as identified in my Windows environment.
Internet connection via ethernet cable to my router is working perfectly.
I disconnected my cable and executed your script as per above, then the following is displayed:

I am also having a problem with this step. I cannot get ethernet wired LAN working on my laptop, so I used another computer to download that .gz file, put it on a flash drive, which I put into the laptop then copied to the desktop. I then substituted the the address of the online .gz file with its location on my desktop (and I out C:/ at the beginning, I don't think the wrong address is the problem), yet this did not work.
Thank you again for any help, I really appreciate this,
Gareth

I'm sorry, but you need a working internet connection using an ethernet cable to be able to execute my solution procedure. If both wired and wireless are not working, I suggest trying other Live CD's from other distro's. You should first get your wired internet connection working before trying to fix the wireless connection, not the other way around.

Hi Mark,
Having tried on all of the scripts you have suggested. I included also the madwifi as per your other instructions above, but I did not succeed being hooked up wireless with my built-in adapter.
A suggestion from another blog: "install Linux-backports
Thank you very much though for all your endeavours in helping to find any appropriate driver solution working with the Atheros adapter. I think I'm going shopping for an USB stick as for now that will work so far as I've learned.
best regards Guenter

Yes, I agree, thank you very much. It was an old laptop anyway, like 5 years old, I need an excuse to buy another.
Thanks very much for your help, I do appreciate it,

It works..... wonderful, thank you.
