Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100 [8086:4232] detects several wireless access points on Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile V6545 in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by Elena09

The documentation I got with my Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile V5645 says that Fn+F1 will turn on my radio components, like wireless and bluetooth. I have no idea how to install and use wireless. The Fn+F1 doesn't start anything apparently on my laptop. There is a soft called Wireless Selector but only for windows. I have Ubuntu 9.04. System Testing from System-Administration says that I have a Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100. But I don't know how to activate it and how to use it. do I need some packages to install? I just want to be able to be able to enter in the local networks on the Internet. Elena

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following command (copy-paste the line below into a Terminal, press enter, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again)

cat /etc/lsb-release; sudo iwlist scanning; sudo lshw -C network; lspci -nn; lsusb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; iwconfig

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread

Keep in mind that one or more of the following 5 basic components need to be configured correctly so that wireless can work correctly in Linux:

Wireless configuration in the BIOS, hardware wireless switch setting, active wireless driver version, the firmware for the wireless chipset (stored as a file in Linux), and the configuration of the wireless parameters in wicd or NetworkManager (SSID broadcast settings, encryption settings, name of wireless interface stored in wicd, the chosen channel for wireless transmission, ...) .

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

Your wireless card seems to be working correctly out-of-the-box. Your output shows your wireless card is detecting 3 different wireless access points. It is normal for Ubuntu to be able to support lots of different wireless cards from the start, without having to manually install wireless drivers. This is Linux, not Windows.

Please try connecting to the Internet using your wireless connection using Networkmanager (the icon in the top right corner of your screen)

Here is more info about NetworkManager:

Regards,

Mark
