Realtek 8198 (0bda:8198) wireless USB adapter not working in Ubuntu 8.10 - no wireless connection to wireless ADSL router

Asked by inigo

I have Ubuntu 8.10 and use a Toshiba Satellite pro Notebook. I have just signed up to wireless but can't access it (am using adsl plug in to phone for now). Provider (like all) said officially they will only help with Microsoft or Apple. Someone suggested I download 'driver robot' which I did but nothing happened - an error message came up. Can anyone help? I'm only semi-literate with Ubuntu so please treat me as a novice! Is there a program I need to access wireless?

Thanks

Hi Inigo,

let's see if I get everything correctly:

- you intend to use your phone as a wireless modem. In that case:
  -- which phone ?
  -- which phone OS (WinMob, Palm, Symbian) ?
  -- which provider ?
  -- can your phone be used as a wireless modem ?
  -- does Ubuntu recognize your phone modem ?
  -- have you configured your phone correctly to access UMTS / EDGE / GPRS ?
  -- can you access wireless directly from your phone ?

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

cat /etc/lsb-release
sudo iwlist scanning
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep witch
iwconfig

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC and your wireless ADSL router (if known) on this thread. If you are having issues accessing a 3G (mobile broadband) network, please specify the model and make of the 3G card and the name of the 3G network.

Keep in mind that one or more of the following 5 basic components need to be configured correctly so that wireless can work correctly in Linux:

Wireless configuration in the BIOS, hardware wireless switch setting, active wireless driver version, the firmware for the wireless chipset (stored as a file in Linux), and the configuration of the wireless parameters in wicd or NetworkManager (SSID broadcast settings, encryption settings, name of wireless interface stored in wicd, the chosen channel for wireless transmission, ...) .

Regards,

Mark

First in response to konq:
I am using my home phone line which has just been altered to run both broadband and VOIP.

I don't know what OS means - nor what the terms mean in brackets (as a novice I am not up on the lingo)

My ISP is iinet (I'm in Australia) which runs on a Tesltra line (so I keep my old telephone number for voip)

I have another computer using the wireless on this system - but it's using Microsoft - so no problems. No doubt if I went back to M. I would not have any problems with this computer - except that would defeat me being on Ubuntu!

I don't know what you mean about Ubuntu recognising the phone modem - the internet certainly works with it - I'm using it now but only with the ethernet cable in place.

Don't know what UMTS etc means.

Last question - answer as above.

Thanks.

Now for Mark's response: here are the results for the cut and paste -

yeomans@yeomans-laptop:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=intrepid
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 8.10"
yeomans@yeomans-laptop:~$ sudo iwlist scanning
[sudo] password for yeomans:
At this point I tried to paste' sudo lshw-C network' but it would not register in the terminal window.

 - PC is a Toshiba Notebook Satellite Pro L300. The modem/router is a Belkin 802.11g Gateway Wireless VOIP IAD.

 - 3G is for mobile phones right? I'm using a landline - the wireless only works around my home.

- As to last point - I don't understand any of it so can't give you an answer! Sorry, I'm a novice.

Thanks very much for your help so far.

Hi,

Method 1
=======

First make sure your pc is connected to the wireless router using an ethernet cable.

Then open a Terminal and enter the following 2 commands:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-intrepid

Then reboot and retest wireless.

Method 2
========

An alternative is downloading and installing the following drivers, if the previous method does not work:

http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2

using the following installation guide:

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download#Directlydownloadingthetarball

Hi Mark,

I tried option 1 and it set off lots of lines of codes and completed - but now I'm not sure what to do to find out if it worked. Should some icon pop up or do i need to look at something in Applications etc? Also I just noticed that Version 9 of Ubuntu is now available for download - so I started it but for some reason it got part way and the connection failed. I have not tried to continue until I find out from you whether that is a good idea while I'm trying to activate wireless.

Thanks

Guy

Hi,

I think you just need to connect using the NetworkManager icon, which is in the top right
corner of the Ubuntu panel.

See the link below for a screenshot of the NetworkManager icon:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetworkManager

Right-click on the Networkmanager icon and then choose the wireless
network you want to connect to. You might need to create a new
connection on eth1 or wlan0 first, or click on "edit network connection"
to see the list of available networks.

If you still cannot connect via NetworkManager, please resend output of following commands:

sudo iwlist scanning
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep witch
iwconfig

Regards,

Mark

Thanks Mark. I think the problem was simply that I did not realise that to activate the wireless I had to first access the 'wired' icon (the 'double TV monitors'). Once I did that, clicked on my wireless login and entered the password the 'multi column' wireless icon activated - I had assumed that would have come up in the first place to enable me to enter the password etc. Now all is well and I am most grateful for the considerable time you expended to help.
