I can't turn on WI-FI because Airplane Mode is Hard Blocked

Asked by cletus maur

How do i turn off Airplane Mode?

I had to step away from my Laptop for awhile so instead of powering it off i suspended it. When i woke it up Airplane Mode was on and I'm unable to turn it off, or turn WI-FI on.

I ran a diagnostic and here are the results, I'm new with Ubuntu and wasn't sure which part of the diagnostic results to post, so i posted everything.

Have you tried Fn + F8 on the keyboard

Is this a dual boot? A user resolved a similar issue by waking the hardware up in Windows then was OK

Yes I've tried the Fn + F8 keys several times a day, everyday.
I was hoping if i tried it often enough that i just might get one lucky try and it would turn on. Needless to say it didn't work lol

Other things I've tried.

Powered Off for several minutes and then it turned back on.

I did a Restart twice.

The Desktop Guide suggested using the power button to turn off the laptop and then turn it back on, which i tried.

The guide also said i need to update my wireless driver, so i updated it.

None of it worked.

No it isn't a dual boot, I only have Ubuntu

This was a Windows 7 laptop, Since it reached it's EOL i have no reason to keep Windows 7 on here.

Try:

rfkill unblock all
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
sudo ip link set wlp2s0 up

Does that help?

Sorry Manfred Hampl and actionparsnip. I want to apologize for not getting back to you sooner.
But i would like to update you on the Airplane Mode being Hard Blocked problem.
A co-worker told me he had the same problem recently and he found an easy way to remove a Hard Block from Airplane Mode. He came here and removed the Hard Block and got the Wi-Fi working again.

This is how he did it.

Open settings → Power.
Turn off Automatic Power Saver.
Unplug the power cord from the Laptop.
Drain the power from the battery, I played games to drain it faster.
When the battery gets around 5% charge, a pop up will tell you that it will go into Hibernation.
When it went into Hibernation i woke it up and and continued playing a game
When it went into Hibernation a second time, I woke it up and played another game.
That managed to fully drain all of the power from the battery and shut down the Laptop.
Wait about 5 minutes and plug the power cord back into the laptop and let it fully charge.
When the battery is fully charged turn the laptop on.
Now the Hard Block will be removed from Airplane Mode and you can now turn on Wi-Fi
