Connected to my wifi router but no internet

Asked by Nassim

After an update my system is unable to connect to my wifi. Sometime it does connect but the signal is so weak that I have to stay 2 meter away from the router at most in order to have a descent connection. I used two different router but with the same result. I updated from 16.04 to 18.04 hoping it would solve the problem but nothing happened (except some broken dependencies to repair - this is done though). Then I also tried to boot on an old kernel version 4.13 but the problem persisted.

1 -I use a Laptop MSI CR62 2M, here is the output of "sudo lshw | grep product":

Have you already experimented with different options and values in /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf ?
e.g. 11n_disable=1 instead of 11n_disable=8

Can you ping he default gateway IP (Your router's internal IP. Probably 192.168.0.1)?
Can you ping 8.8.8.8 OK?

Hi actionparsnip,

Neither of them. I noticed something strange though. If I use my phone as a Wifi repeater with the application Netshare i manage to access internet pages (such as this one right now) but still i cannot ping 8.8.8.8 neither 192.168.0.1.

Have you tried rebooting your router? It is just another computer. Leave it off for a minute then back on. It can help

HI,

A small update. I realized that when I open the software updater in the driver tab I see the following message.
"Intel Corporqtion:Wireless 3160 (Dual Band Wireless AC3160)
this device is not working"
...and then the following options but i can only select the seconde one"
"- using iwlwifi driverbackport in DKMS format from backport-iwlwifi-dkms (open souce)" ...grey and impossible to select
"- continue using a manually installed driver"
"- Do not use the device" ... selected by default and grey and impossible to select if I click on the 2nd option
Choosing the second option doesn't change anything and no matter what the software updater indicate I can still detect the wifi and connect but i don't get any data.
The strangest thing is that when I use my phone as a wifi repeater and connect to it I can use internet through my browser only.
I am still stuck with this can someone please help.

Thanks
