Intel AX200 wifi will not enable on Ubuntu 18.04

Asked by Lonnie Sears

Even with the correct iwlwifi driver ucode installed, having trouble getting a new, minimal install of Ubuntu 18.04LTS to enable the Intel AX200 wifi 6 card. Had the same difficulties with an install of 18.04LTS Mate flavor. Was only able to get the wifi working by upgrading the kernel with one of the 51 versions as opposed to version 50, but that caused other issues. Here is the diagnostic output, sorry for the length:

You will get the same difficulties because the only difference between he two is the default desktop environment. The underlying OS is 100% identical. It's like changing the wallpaper in Windows and expecting your printer to start working....

Do you have the latest BIOS for the system?

"Do you have the latest BIOS for the system?"

Yes, with the exception of the version that was released yesterday. The F4 version I have installed was released on 8/29/2019.

" You will get the same difficulties because the only difference between he two is the default desktop environment"

I have to agree with that also, once again changed the kernel and got it working again. Although the minimal install is is horrid, as it will not allow the user to change anything. You can't install anything that is not in their poor assortment of crappy out-dated programs, or change desktop environments. I wanted to get away from others telling me what I could or couldn't do on my computer. Suppose I'll either have to find another distro or build from scratch to get what I want and still have it work. Thanks for your time anyway.

The minimal ISO doesn't install a desktop so you can change the / install whatever desktop environment you like. That's the point of the minimal iso. It gives a bare bones OS. The a UI gives the option to install the typical desktop session for Ubuntu but it isn't mandatory. I personally install this way, drop to command line and install OpenBox. This is essentially building from scratch, much like the install method of Arch.

What feature in the new version of any package you can name do you absolutely need? I'm very curious. Yes the packages are not bang up to date but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Remember the target audience of Ubuntu is for newcomers to Linux. Stability is king in Ubuntu rather than chasing the latest version number.

While I'm not one to chase after the latest and greatest, since this computer is a new build, an up to date wifi driver would be a good start. Also as an artist/designer the version of Gimp is several years out-dated. And while all the rage seems to be Libre Office as a word processor, in my opinion it is awful and much prefer Open Office. Apparently its a licensing thing, but Apache is still available in a Linux platform. But when you have removed LibO and installed OpO in it's place the distro still keep trying to reinstall LibO over top of OpO and it really screws things up.

Not sure I know what the a UI is. What I downloaded was 18.04LTS (not any flavor), which gave two install options. Either full or minimal. And since I didn't want to uninstall the programs I didn't want (Which didn't go so well while trying the Budge and Mate desktops), I opted for the minimal. That had no easy way to access user rights, which compounded the other difficulties. Just about has to enter a password just to be allowed to move the mouse. None of the different installs were very happy with my attempts to add OpenBox to them either.

You'll have to excuse me some, just tired and frustrated. Been battling this thing for a week and still don't have an OS on it.

It won't let me do it on here so I'm going to try to send a couple of thumbs of some of the desktop backgrounds I create. Much appreciate your time.

UI is a user interface. It's a common acronym. The mini ISO (with no flavour) is about 30Mb in size and installs using the repositories online rather than packages on the CD which will then need updating.

You don't have to enter a password to move the mouse.

Guess I don't see that as an obvious option. would that be the Network Installer or the Ubuntu Server download.

And the bit about the mouse was irony, because that was about the only thing that didn't ask for a root password.

And sorry I can't find a way to submit a couple thumbs for you to see, unless it is as an attachment. Not sure that doing that would be allowed, or would go through. Thanks.

It's like the server install but you can install a very bare bones OS. Mine is around 3Gb for the OS and is very punchy

Thank you, I'll give that a try. Also looking into MX Linux, which appears to be highly configurable, stable and also Debian based, but still not as overwhelming as something like Arch.

On the new build the OS size isn't so important. Right now there is a 2TB SSHD with a 500GB SSD secondary and 32GB ram with support for 128GB. Although it will matter more on my laptop which still has a 1TB SSHD, where it runs into trouble is the ram being limited to 8GB. It only has about 10% of the HD filled, but either working on Gimp or having several tabs open on Firefox it just blows the ram to full capacity. Besides I need something to replace Windows 7 with and refuse to install an OS by a company that attempted to coerce people, by installing adware, into using their newer product. Only because they couldn't get anyone to use the last couple versions they came out with on account that those versions were downgrades compared to Win 7.

My apologies for getting of topic, it's just a peeve of mine. Do appreciate your time, I'll download both the Network Installer and the Server version, make usb's of each and see what they boot up like.

But what will end up being a deciding factor, is whether or not I can update the kernel to one that will allow the wifi card to work without breaking everything else in the process.

Arch isn't hard. It's just more typing. If you want a challenging install then try Gentoo. Arch is still a binary package based distribution like Ubuntu.

If you want a rolling release distribution then there are lots to go at. Ubuntu is a staged package release distribution and packages can be left in favour of stability.

Could try the 5.2 kernel from the kernel mainline PPA. Dead easy. May help

Use the latest 5.2 you can get. I think 5.2.18 is latest last I checked.

While using the Mate desktop I tried using the 5.1.21 kernel, the system just didn't seem to like it but the wifi worked. when I switched to the no flavor minimal, thought maybe not going so far into the future might work better so I used the 5.1. It worked until I tried installing the Enchantment desktop, which broke everything again. Couldn't get the wifi back even after removing Enchantment.

Still not sure which download you are suggesting. There is the Sever version (848MB) that doesn't come with a desktop interface, but has a lot of required dependencies for networking and raid arrays, so that doesn't seem right. Also on the download drop down there is an unobtrusive link for a network installer, which is intended to allow one to boot from a network. That link takes you to a page where you select your architecture then takes you to another page with several downloads, one of which is listed as mini iso. As for the other items there, one is listed as boot loader among others. Is just the mini iso adequate, or would you need any of the other items? Like with the kernel you need the headers, the image and the module. Or am I still overlooking the obvious?

It is. There is a basic installer and package system. The web based repository is used instead of the CD. Obviously you will need to get internet access setup in the system before the installer will run. I suggest using a wired connection to make this easier.

See https://askubuntu.com/a/1046682/300665 as that one needs iwlwifi backports as far as I know

@Jeremy, thank you, I've finally have it working again. Updated the kernel to 5.2.8, still had to reset the network manager a couple times before it would switch over to wifi. So far the newer kernel doesn't seem to be messing with anything else this time. I'll just keep my fingers crossed(-;
