Ethernet controller (Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411) shows Network Unclaimed

Asked by jason berry

Hello,

I need some help. I cannot get my Realtek Ethernet controller to work, it seems to have stopped after applying some updates ??

I have managed to get back online using a USB Wireless connection, after much trawling I've come to a dead end. I thought the problem was with a driver for RTL8169, but think I have blacklisted and reverted to an earlier version:-

sudo apt-get install r8168-dkms, gives :-
r8168-dkms is already the newest version (8.041.00-1).

Diagnostic information is as follows:-

There seems to be some kind of software or version incompatibility.

Your sources.list shows "bionic", but the r8168-dkms version (8.041.00-1) is the one for xenial. This does not fit together.

For diagnostic purposes please provide the output of the following commands:

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
apt list --upgradeable
apt-cache policy r8168-dkms

I have some updates to apply, from the last week, should I apply those. I've held off to avoid any confusion. ?

I did have some problems with sources not being reachable, so had made some changes, (following instructions), but was careful to comment what had been changed, see JPB comments

Details from those commands are as follows:-

You are missing bionic/universe, but have xenial/universe instead.

edit your sources.list configuration file and perform the following changes:
lines 23 and 24 (bionic universe): remove the comment indicators (bionic universe)
line 51 (precise partner): remove the comment indicator and change "precise" into "bionic"
line 88 and following: completely remove these lines.

eventually:
lines 11 and 17: you could consider changing back to //gb.archive.ubuntu... to consistently use the same server.
lines 44 and 45: you could consider changing to //security.ubuntu... to consistently use the same server.

Then run
sudo apt-get update
apt list --upgradeable
and copy/paste the output.
If you do not see any error message, you can also try installing all available updates.

And back to the WLAN device, what output do you now receive for
sudo lshw -C network
Does it still show UNCLAIMED?
If it does, what happens after issuing the commands
sudo modprobe -rv r8169
sudo modprobe -v r8168

And I just see, het there is still a wrong entry "xenial" listed in your output. You seem to to have executed the action "delete everything from line 88 onwards"

Everything seems to be working, is this what you would expect?

Regarding the sources list
- can i just remove the xenial library - deb http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial main restricted universe ?

many thanks

The network issue seems to be solved (apparently the correct driver is now loaded and is working).

And yes, it is the line

deb http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial main restricted universe

that should be removed (or at least commented out).
The lines bevor and after this line also are not relevant. They are already commented out, but could be deleted as well.

@Daljit singh: please do not piggyback on somebody else's question, but create a question document of your own. There is no way to track the status of your problem in a question document that has already been marked as "solved".
