I am trying to get the wifi on my new ASUS GL702ZC to work. It is not detected.

Asked by preetam

I am trying to get the wifi working on my new ASUS Rog GL702ZC laptop. It has a realtek RT8822be wireless adaptor on its pcie expansion port. The wireless card is barely detected. The only thing I see is the single line entry on the lspci listing it as Realtek b822. How do I debug this ? Where are the drivers?

This seems to be a known problem, and drivers not yet available in official sources.
Bug #1745081 contains a source tarball that might help

There are also other proposals to download and build a driver, e.g. https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2364383 and https://forum.ubuntu-it.org/viewtopic.php?p=5022323

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install git build-essential linux-headers-generic
git clone https://github.com/rtlwifi-linux/rtlwifi-next
cd rtlwifi-next
make
sudo make install

I would actually do in terminal

sudo apt-get install git dkms

git clone -b extended https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git

sudo dkms add ./rtlwifi_new

sudo dkms install rtlwifi-new/0.6

Larry Finger's github now supports this wifi chipset and has been updated since the rtlwifi-linux site has

Where did you get the 4.1t kernel from? Your output says 4.13

What is the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a

Please?

@andrew : I just used ukuu kernel update utlity to get a higher kernel. That actually was needed for my touchpad to work.

Last night, I updated the kernel to 4.15.3.
Using the extended branch of the rtlwifi-new , allowed me to compile the wifi driver. Even after installing that driver (which I have posted above in lsmod result), I am unable to see the wifi interface in ifconfig.

Here is the dmesg output:

"r8822be 0000:07:00.0: Direct firmware load for rtlwifi/rtl8822befw.bin failed with error -2"

You seem to be missing a firmware file.
A quick web search shows that a file with this name is available at
https://github.com/rtlwifi-linux/rtlwifi-next/tree/master/firmware/rtlwifi
or
https://github.com/wkennington/linux-firmware/tree/master/rtlwifi

It works now. Here are the steps I took to get everything working in my laptop:

1. use ethernet or usb dongle to connect.
2. ukuu kernel update utility.
3. update kernel to 4.15.2
4.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install git build-essential linux-headers-generic
git clone https://github.com/rtlwifi-linux/rtlwifi-next
cd rtlwifi-next
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe rtl8822be

5. Download rtl8822befw from https://github.com/rtlwifi-linux/rtlwifi-next/tree/master/firmware/rtlwifi
sudo cp ~/Downloads/rtl8822befw /lib/firmware/rtlwifi

6. Reboot.

This fixed not just the wifi, but other components like touch pad as well.
