Wireless BCM43142 not detected on ubuntu 16.04

Asked by Olver Hernandez

I have a Dell Inspiron 14Z - 5423. I installed Ubuntu and the wireless was working fine. Some days ago it stop working. Can someone help me?

I tried upgrading the system and I tried installing the firmware-b43-installer package and it didn't work.
Also tried the bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.248+bdcom-0ubuntu0.2_amd64.deb package from the ubuntu website and it didn't work.

In the network devices doesn't appear the wifi option.

This is the output of the command in the Wireless Troubleshooting Procedure:

Some remarks:

1. According to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx you should try the bcmwl-kernel-source or the broadcom-sta driver packages (current version is 6.30.223.271)

2. Your current driver settings are contradictory, you want to use the bcma driver, but it is blacklisted.

3. You are running Ubuntu xenial, but the package management configuration has references to the repositories for precise and wily. This should be corrected.

I manage to solve the problem, going back to the kernel 4.10.0-37

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get purge firmware-b43-installer

sudo apt-get install linux-image-4.10.0-37-generic linux-image-extra-4.10.0-37-generic linux-headers-4.10.0-37-generic

restarting with this kernel 4.10.0-37

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

and then removing other kernels.

It seems that the driver is not working with kernels >= 4.11 (post #3 in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1713638)

It seems that for all kernel versions >=4.11 you need to apply the patch in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1713638 post #4
(wrap line 2918 in src/wl/sys/wl_linux.c in an #if...)

Just tried to install the path and recompiling the module, but I got a lot of errors.
Then probably I will wait the next version of the module with the patch included in order to install a updated kernel :D

In this post https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1724863 you can find the way to install the version: 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.2 that works with the kernel 4.13.0-37
