Terminal output for wireless problem

Asked by Sam Jackson

I was directed to run the following terminal command to address a problem I have in Ubuntu 17.04, where my wireless connection will drop despite having a full signal showing on the desktop. I have to turn wifi off and back on constantly, and have yet to find a solution. I have a Lenovo Ideapad 110, and I am trying to access my wireless connection through Comcast.

Cool. If you run:

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/null

Does the internet work OK?

Nope. It still did the same thing.

Your Terminal output shows this issue:

wlp2s0 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"belkin.270"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: 08:86:3B:31:F2:70
          Bit Rate=150 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm

The bit rate of 150 Mb/s is probably too high and is destabilizing your wireless
connection.

Please log into the wireless router using a working, WIRED Internet
connection, and force the wireless router to use Wireless-G speeds.
So force the router to lower the speed from 144.4 Mb/s to 54 Mb/s to try to
stabilize the connection.

Also change the ESSID name on the router from belkin.270 to belkin270. Avoid using the . in the ESSID name.

Then please reboot and retest wireless.

If that does not help, run the following Terminal command:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821ae.conf

# Using the gedit editor, copy-paste the following configuration line into that .conf file:

options rtl8821ae debug=0 disable_watchdog=N fwlps=N swlps=Y swenc=Y ips=N msi=0

# Save the change to the new /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821ae.conf file

Then please reboot and retest wireless.

I cannot log into the router as listed here, and I cannot change anything. I tried to switch routers, and I could not even log on to wireless in Ubuntu at all. I can only use Windows. This is an Ubuntu problem, clearly.

The gedit warnings "Set document metadata failed ..." can safely be ignored.

Do you see anything changing after setting the options (and after a reboot)?

Okay, I've rebooted again and I have only had to re-connect to wireless after I had the computer in sleep mode. I'll look at it again today and say for sure.

Okay, five minutes later, I had the same problem, twice in two minutes. There seems to be no solution I've been given that works. My old laptop has Ubuntu 16.04 on it, but it does not have this problem. Do I need to reinstall the operating system again?

I've swapped routers again and now I seem to be able to connect to this one. I'll let you know later if it worked.

Never mind. The connection got interrupted after less than two minutes, then failed to stay connected after I turned WiFi off and back on. I'm spending more time with Wifi turned off than on at this point.

I see redundant configuration files
/etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821ae.conf:options rtl8821ae debug=0 disable_watchdog=N fwlps=N swlps=Y swenc=Y ips=N msi=0
/etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821aefix.conf:options rtl8821ae swenc=1

You should delete one (sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821aefix.conf) and reboot, but I do not think that this will help.

I can only repeat Mark Rijckenberg's advice to lower the maximum transmission rate on the router.

Subject: Re: [Question #657727]: Terminal output for wireless problem

Your question #657727 on gnome-nettool in Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/657727

    Status: Open => Answered

Manfred Hampl proposed the following answer:
I see redundant configuration files
/etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821ae.conf:options rtl8821ae debug=0 disable_watchdog=N fwlps=N swlps=Y swenc=Y ips=N msi=0
/etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821aefix.conf:options rtl8821ae swenc=1

You should delete one (sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821aefix.conf) and
reboot, but I do not think that this will help.

I can only repeat Mark Rijckenberg's advice to lower the maximum
transmission rate on the router.
