Intel Wireless 7260 issues

Asked by Eli Countrywood

Hello All,
So here are my issues. I am trying to get my wifi card to work in Unity. I am able to 'enable wireless' as in I can check the option yet no signal bars appear in the quarter circle icon. I can not see my wireless network in the connections editor. Wifi works fine when I boot same machine in Windows. I noticed that the wifi card is 'hard blocked'. The keyboard wifi button enables and disables bluetooth, yet no wifi signal bars appear. Thanks for the help.

Wifi switch turns bluetooth on and off - wifi status remains unchanged. Noticing that the wireless adapter was hardblocked I tried to unblock it using "sudo rfkill unblock all". I was not able to find a switch for the wireless adapter in BIOS set up (F2 at startup) on this machine - Dell Inspirion 7537. ???

You've been messing with your hostname haven't you. If you run:

sudo gedit /etc/hosts

Change:
127.0.1.1 parallax-Inspiron-7537
To:
127.0.1.1 inspiron-7537

Save the new file and close gedit.

Reboot to test

They messed up the code that was supposed to fix this issue from 3 years ago, for now

gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Scroll to the line that begins with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and add acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\" inside the quotes, it will likely be

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\""

When you are done, save and exit the text editor, then in terminal

sudo update-grub

Reboot and see if the wireless can be enabled with the FN combo

Thanks for the response actionparsnip,

I did not intentionally change any hostname. I entered 'parallax' when prompted during the initial Ubuntu setup.

Anyways, I made the indicated change as directed and saved the file. I tried the terminal command 'close gedit' and 'exit gedit' but was not sure if they had any effect.

file now reads:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 inspiron-7537

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters

My terminal prompt appears as: "parallax@inspiron-7537:~$"

Reboot seems to have no immediate effect on wifi problem. Any other ideas?

Thanks for your response Jeremy.

I was able to change the file as directed.
Below you will find the current readout of said file.
I rebooted and still show no bars in the wireless icon.
I assumed the FN command is the function key which is associated with turning on and off wireless communications on my keyboard. Thanks for your help!

Can you change the hard block result in
rfkill list
With the keyboard now?

I attempted to use the keyboard to turn on wireless. The bluetooth icon would respond so I know the key is working but wifi signal did not appear. Below are the results of rfkill list and an atttempt to unblock all using rfkill.

I am happy to replace my wifi card with some other cheap(<$30) linux compatible one. I looked on Amazon and was able to find many that said they worked with Ubuntu however not all worked with Ubuntu16.04. Suggestions?

Potential replacement card option, although I think I saw some issues with the AC 7260 somewhere in the forums.

Intel says this adapter works with the following kernels and gives a tarball in which I assume there are "drivers" for the adapter.

Intel® Wireless-N 7260,
Kernel 4.2+ iwlwifi-7260-ucode-25.30.14.0.tgz
Kernel 4.1+ iwlwifi-7260-ucode-25.30.13.0.tgz

parallax@inspiron-7537:~$ echo "blacklist del_rbtn" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/dell_rbtn.conf

upon reboot I 'enabled wirless' yet the wireless LAN is still blocked.

parallax@inspiron-7537:~$ sudo rfkill unblock all

 Hard blocked: yes
1: phy0: Wireless LAN

2: hci0: Bluetooth

Ill get the new wireless adapter today and Ill give that a try. Thanks for your help!

Wondering if i can get some help on how to install this driver tarball from Intel.
I see my card is supported with firmware but how to make sure said firmware is on my machine, or put it on if need be.

The command is

echo "blacklist dell_rbtn" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/dell_rbtn.conf

You used del_rbtn. You have firmware version 17 being used
