detecting modem with ubuntu

Asked by martin

I am setting up a used computer with Ubuntu for use with a telephone line modem (it is currently connected with an ethernet cable but will not have access to broadband). I can not figure out how to make the telephone line connection. It has a modem installed but I am not sure where to look for it with the Ubuntu os. In network devices there is something called 'loopback' --- ? Thanks, Jim
