'Wireless 'Networks greyed out with Thompson SpeedTouch Wireless Router

Asked by Ian Mackenzie

Wireless Router works perfectly well under MS XP - WEP + Standard Router Firewall.
But with Ubuntu 8.10 left-click on Network icon shows "Wireless Networks" greyed out.
Router does work with direct wired connection.
Help!

have you checked that your wireless card for PC/Laptop is working under ubuntu
use system->administration->hardware drivers to find out that is there any closed source driver need to be enabled
you may have to download firmware for your card in some cases as well

I have checked this but no proprietary drivers are listed - so cannot either be enabled or disabled.

Linux hardware test reveals that my Compaq nx9005 has a Broadcom BCM4306 Wireless LAN Controller.

install package bcm43xx-fwcutter present in your installation cd (while using wired connection to router)
it will download appropriate firmware for you after your confirmation
after installation reboot and your wireless should be working

I managed to find the package and it installed OK. But it faulted on finding the site for the firmware - 'could not parse'.
However, I was prompted for a driver update which I downloaded and installed.
Wireless now works!
Thanks for the help!
