need help getting wireless network card (Instant Wireless Network PC Card ver.3 LINKSYS) working

Asked by ceuthophilus

I have a Dell Latitude C610 which was running Windows 2000, I've wiped it completely clean and installed Ubuntu (version 8.10), from a CD. I cannot figure out how to install the driver for my PCMCI slot network card (Instant Wireless Network PC Card ver.3 LINKSYS), or even what driver I should use (I downloaded a file called linux_wlan_ng_0114_prel.tar.gz via my other, windows machine and put it on the desktop of the Ubuntu machine, but don't know if it is correct file, or what to do with it or how to open it).

When I started to place this query here on launchpad, a series of other similar questions were automatically suggested - I've looked at these, but the combined effect is that it looks like the process will be long and painful, especially given that I'm not computer techy at all (many of the answers used terms that I do not understand). I'm afraid the Ubuntu has not yet achieved the level of access to the common man (or woman) that I had hoped, but not wanting to throw in my hat and sulk back to windows too quickly, would someone be willing to hold the hand of this dummy and try to get my wireless working?

1 free beer of your choice, should you succeed and also happen to pass through my town (offer void if this would result in underage drinking, or just wait a few years to validate the offer!).

Thanks for considering this,
Steve T.

Mark,

Thank you for your rapid reply, wow!

I've followed your instructions, with my wireless card plugged into the computer. Note that "Amblypygi" (see below) is just a name I typed in whilst trying to create a wireless connection. Here are the results of the tests:

Hi,

My first impression is that your wireless card driver is installed and working correctly.

Have you tried turning off encryption on the wireless router and then trying to set up a new wireless connection using the Network Manager icon that should be in the top right corner of your screen (in Ubuntu)?

It is 2:33 AM here now so I will have to go to sleep... Hope someone else can take over....

Regards,

Mark

Remember the first part where I said I was "not computer techy" and a "dummy"? Well, you are right, I've had a wireless signal all along, I just didn't recognize the icon at the top of the screen as being wireless connections (duh, it isn't even very diff from windows). I've still not made my connection yet - probably due to encryption - but I'll read up on that on the web before posting another q on this topic - soo I'm calling this 'solved'. Plus, someone searching for help topics probably doesn't want one question blending into the next. Thanks for your efforts.
