No network is it due to Intel Pro100 card(wired)

Asked by edds

Built a ubunta machine over the weekend using an old windows 2000 machine.

It has a intel pro100 (chip 82559) however I got occasional access to bbc.co.uk website but not anymore.

I can ping to say print server on 192.168.1.100 and it will print, however I cannot get outside world.

Whe i do a ifconfig it does not give a ip for the eth0 card.

Do I need to get a new pci network card and if so which is the best one.

or do I need to install new drivers... if it is this one I will need some guide as I am a newby....well used linux 9 years ago when it never had a decent installer and gave up.

My vista laptop access to the internet is fine using the gateway... 192.168.1.254

I have setup static ip on the linux machine...

The build is ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386 downloaded last night...

I have jsut about had enough of this issue been at it for a few hours any help would save my sanity.

Edd

Hi Edd

Can you post the ifconfig output for us. Also what is you internet connection? Do you have an ADSL router which can provide DCHP like I have? Go to System > Administration > Network. Is your network card listed as a Wired Connection? If it is, is it enabled? Unlock and go to its Properties. What are they?

I do use DHCP... but I always use static address's in my network

the wired details are static.

IP. 192.168.1.72
SN:255.255.255.0
GW 192.168.1.254
DNS: 192.168.1.254

I have no way of getting the iconfig into this windows machine.

however I get

inet addr: 192.168.1.72 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

RX bytes 1184555 (1.1MB) TX bytes:97677 (95.3KB)

However I can ping any part of the internal network so I can ping this machine, print server and the Raq3

Thanks
Edd

Hi Edd

Tell me about your internet connection. I.e how this machine is connected to the internet. If you have router(s), what are their IP addresses. What provides the DCHP service for you? Why don't you use it?

What do you see from System > Administration > Network.

The internet conection is done via a home hub.

All other machines access it.

I always use static DHCP even though the DHCP server is within the router (infact I allow dhcp to work and assign an ip I then turn the device into a static IP after that) I use a managed switch which then allows on specific ips to use the outside world.

Win pc >>> Managed Router >>> BT Home Hub (gateway/router/DHCP server) works Static IP 192.168.1.68
Ubuntu pc >>> Managed Router >>> BT Home Hub (gateway/router/DHCP server) does not work 192.168.1.72

Both use DNS as 192.168.1.254
and both use gateway 192.168.1.254
on subnet 255.255.255.0

Print server 192.168.1.100
RAQ3 server 192.168.1.200
Dell File Server(next project) 192.168.1.295
Iphone 192.168.1.102
wifes Machine 192.168.1.84
Edds machine (2) 192.168.1.70
BT Vision Box 192.168.1.71

I can ping a tracert to all other internal IP's however the linux machine cannot ping outside the network (it did 2 days ago when it was a windows box)

The managed switch I took out earlier and tried using the dhcp server to allocate ip I got the same ip assigned and still no outside world.

I read that the intel e100 drivers could be at fault however have no idea(as i am a newbie) how to change them or would you recommend a network card that works.

When I try and configure eth0 it says it does not exist...even though it does and pings to internal network.

Regards
Edd

Hi Edd

And what do you see in System > Administration > Network. Does it show the Wired connection and is it enabled?

If it is not (and I think you are saying that it inst), try going to

http://support.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-012904.htm

to identify the exact card version that you have and what the latest drivers for it are.

Otherwise, what are the properties of the wired connection.

What are the IP addresses of the Managed Router and the Home Hub. If either of these is configured via a web page, does that work OK.

Can you ping all the other machines on the local network.

What I am getting at here is that if you can ping around the local network and call up a web page from one of the routers then your card is working and there is some thing in your configuration stopping access beyond the local network.

I sorted it out by replacing the network card and reinstalling with a non intel based card

Had a similar problem with onboard Intel 82566DC Gigabit. It would occasionally get an IP number and connect, but it would sometimes take half a dozen reboots before it would successfully get an IP number from the router. I downloaded the driver .tar file from Intel, did make install to install the new driver with the current kernel drivers. Definite improvement - of the last 4 boots, three have resulted in an internet connection. I suspect there is a issue with 10.10 interfacing with some of Intel's older drivers, particularly on 64-bit systems, since I had no connectivity problems with 32-bit 10.10. I've filed a bug report with the Ubuntu developers.
