Try:

echo "options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=0 swcrypto=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwififix.conf > /dev/null

reboot to test

echo "options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=0 swcrypto=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwififix.conf > /dev/nullB
bash: /dev/nullB: Permission denied

Your command is dirrent to mine. However, if you run:

cat /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwififix.conf

Do you see the line?

Steve Wheeler (echo.decim8) said : #4

That worked. Sorry did not see my own mistake. Now my wifi seems to be working and has not dropped but I am not longer showing that I am even connected in the network manager and I cannot switch networks. Simply says"device not ready" under wireless networks and connection information is grayed out. When I open network, it shows my router as "out of range" but I am obviously still connected.

Steve Wheeler (echo.decim8) said : #5

Disregard last. Appears to be due to a bad attempt to uninstall wicd which I have now corrected and everything is functioning fine. If it continues, I will mark as fixed and THANK YOU so much. Can you please describe to me what this did and why it worked? Sorry I am brand new to Ubuntu (as if you couldn't already tell!) and am trying to learn.

Thanks again

Its quite simple, the .conf files in /etc/modprobe.d are read when modules are loaded and enforce settings on them. he file name itself is irrelevant but the file extension (ironically) does.

Your wireless is using the iwlwifi module and the main option I wanted to try was:

swcrypto=1

Which makes the CPU do the network decryption instead of the card itself. This is often the fix and is what I always go for first. Sometimes (under Linux) the cards just don't keep up or it is needed any way and set in Windows to happen this way but it is not default in the driver. The option makes this happen and the connection is much more stable.

The other option is to do with cards that have bluetooth as well and the option tells the driver to expect a bluetooth interface as well. It's not really needed but some systems have it. You could remove that option and reboot to test.

Steve Wheeler (echo.decim8) said : #7

Again, thanks so much. Still getting disconnected but it is definitely more stable and happening less often. Seems like something else is at play though. Definitely helped and less frequent disconnects.

Your Terminal output shows this issue:

wlp58s0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"DarkMatter 2.4ghz"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: C0:56:27:33:26:03
          Bit Rate=144.4 Mb/s Tx-Power=22 dBm

The bit rate of 144.4 Mb/s is probably too high and is destabilizing your wireless
connection.

Please log into the wireless router using a working, WIRED Internet
connection, and force the wireless router to use Wireless-G speeds. So
force the router to lower the speed from 144.4 Mb/s to 54 Mb/s to try to
stabilize the connection.

Then please retest wireless.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Steve Wheeler for more information if necessary.
