Asked by Pete Booth

Hi to all! i downloaded the 8.04 and burnt it to cd on my windows pc which ONLY has wireless internet. I have installed 8.04 and it is working ok but i can't access the net in ubuntu to download the wireless addon is there a way to get it on my windows pc then transfer it to ubuntu or what else can be done. I have 3 usb wireless, netgear, linksys and sitecom to try, they all work with xp pro. I realise that connecting with ethernet cable would solve this problem but i cannot do that right now. I am using the windows pc to ask this question

Pete,

Use synaptic to create a file which will give you the download name and location for the file(s) you need:

Navigate to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Messenger (assuming you are using Gnome)

Search for the driver you need, and mark it.

Then create the package download list:

Navigate to in synaptic: File > Generate package download script

This will generally save it into your home folder, it doesn't matter what you name it.

Then open the file you created, and carefully write down the http address for each file. Then using your WinXP box, you can use IE to go to and download each file. Transfer the file(s) to a usb flash drive. Take the flash drive to the Ubuntu box. If it's a single file, just navigate to the file on the flash drive and double click it. If it's multiple files then I recommend that you add the downloaded files to synaptic, then use synaptic to install the driver.

To add the files to synaptic do the following:

Navigate to in synaptic: File > Add downloaded packages

After they are added, then you can search for the driver in synaptic, mark it, apply changes, and you are done.

Please report back here and modify the question status to Solved if this resolves your question.

Thanks!

Harvey

Harvey, thanks for a swift reply, away on holiday right now but I will try
your suggestion when I get home, it was a last minute thing so not a great
idea for me to ask for help at that time, cheers Pete.
