connecting to wireless router

Asked by Nugmonster

OS ubuntu 10:10 connected this computer to wireless router. Copied settings exactly on other computer with same OS but will not connect. No listing of available connections is shown and there is no icon for wireless connection. The computer also has windows 7 installed and this does connect to the router but in my attempts to connect through Ubuntu I boot the computer in Ubuntu. Very frustrated. Any suggestions appreciated.

If you are updating between releases, you could just download the latest ISO, burn it to a CD, and use that to update his computer.

If the customer has any special packages installed which were not part of the original install CD, then there may be some things that cannot be upgraded. Your apt update tool of choice should let you know about that though:

# apt-cdrom add
# aptitude update
# aptitude dist-upgrade

Hopefully that does what you need.

You will probably want to remove the CD line from his apt repositories (/etc/apt/sources.list) after the update.

@David i usually use the Ubuntu alternate cd to upgrade, simply put the cd into driver and Ubuntu ask me to upgrade...

May i suggest to install Deluge client, to download torrent files, from http://deluge-torrent.org/downloads.php and please download the Ubuntu 8.04 release you need by selecting a .torrent link from http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04/

Hope this helps

Thank you all really it was a combination of all you guys who helped me understand this OS a little better and I think I might even install it on an extra drive I have and play with it and become more familiar with Ubuntu.

Also please be sure to check and compare the md5sums of your downloaded iso images and burned cd or dvd with the MD5SUMS link contents, provided by Ubuntu, you can find it into the same download directory
Here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Can the alternate cd be ordered. I found the download but I have a way too slow dial up.

I have been driving myself crazy trying to find everything needed for updates and libraries and packages just to use other programs I have downloaded.

Thanks.
