The full Terminal output shows at least 2 issues:

1)

                    Channel:11
                    Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
                    ESSID:"TNCAP8EE28B"
                    Channel:11
                    Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
                    ESSID:"BTWiFi"
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

                    Channel:11
                    Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
                    ESSID:"BTWiFi-with-FON"
                    Channel:1
                    Frequency:2.412 GHz (Channel 1)
                    ESSID:"TALKTALK238963"
                    Channel:11
                    Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
                    ESSID:"BTHub3-QGX8"
                    Channel:6
                    Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6)
                    ESSID:"BTHub4-3ZF8_2GEXT"
                    Channel:6
                    Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6)
                    ESSID:"BTHub5-FQG5"
                    Channel:6
                    Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6)
                    ESSID:"BTWifi-with-FON"
                    Channel:6
                    Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6)
                    ESSID:"BTWifi-X"
                    Channel:11
                    Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
                    ESSID:"BTHub5-F5F9"

In order to avoid wireless interference from the other wireless access points, please log into your wireless router using a working, WIRED Internet connection. Please change the wireless transmission channel to channel 3.

2) wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"TNCAP8EE28B"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 30:91:8F:8E:E2:8B
          Bit Rate=65 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm

The wireless transmission speed of 65 Mb/s is probably too high and is destabilizing your wireless connection. I suggest logging into your wireless router and forcing it to use Wireless-G (54 Mb/s) speeds.

Then reboot your PC and retest wireless.

Thank you Mark,
I have logged into my router, but there seems to be no facility to
change the settings you suggest, (perhaps because it was supplied by my
ISP? ) I did however get into the router log which mentions a firewall
problem. Is this something I can rectify?

I have contacted my ISP, who has now reset router to work on channel 3 as suggested. So far all appears well! Thank you for your assistance.
