wifi broken by 16.04

Asked by David Shochat

SOLVED? I was finally able to connect but not sure what did it. First, based on the data below, I noticed what might be some contention on channel 11, so I changed the access point to 7 which none of my neighbors seemed to be using. Then acting on suggestions from System76 Support, tried "forgetting" the network several times, logging out and back in and finally putting the password into a text file so I could paste it and beat the very short timeout. Anyway, maybe no point in anyone spending time on this for now.

This computer is a (4-year old) System76 Lemur Ultra (lemu4) laptop (originally Clevo)
The wireless access point I have been trying to connect to is CenturyLink3062.
I installed Ubuntu 16.04 to my hard disk (from ISO).

From the output of lspci -nn:
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 1030 [Rainbow Peak] [8086:008a] (rev 34)

Any help would be appreciated. This laptop has never before had any problem with WiFi since I got it 4 years ago.
Thank you
David Shochat

If you run:

sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi; sleep 5;sudo modprobe iwlwifi

Is it OK?

Running that caused the wifi to disconnect briefly and then reconnect. So I think that means ok.
