Ubuntu not recognizing wifi card

Asked by Colm

Hi I read a lot of forum pages on this and one on this site was the only one I could actually follow. I'm not very tech savy so really need basic instructions on how to resolve this. My Dell XPS 13 2015 stopped working recently, no bootable device found. Installing Ubuntu from a USB has brought it back to life but I can't use the build in wifi. The signal bar is just greyed out. If I plug in a wifi USB adapter it works through that and that's what I'm using now. I saw instructions on another thread to run a command and paste the result to here so please see below. Any help would be great

Just to add, I've seen a few answers to other similar questions and they all were solved but I really can't follow the instructions. Any help for me would need to be basically Linux for Dummies so sorry for that. Also, my laptop doesn't have an ethernet socket.

Your Terminal output shows this issue in the /boot directory :

3407877 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 189010 janv. 22 18:39 config-4.2.0-27-generic
3408167 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 189010 mars 18 19:21 config-4.2.0-35-generic
3407874 drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 avril 16 09:18 grub
3408164 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 19471405 avril 15 23:58 initrd.img-4.2.0-27-generic
3408169 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 19482681 avril 16 09:18 initrd.img-4.2.0-35-generic

So your kernel configuration changed today. Look at the modification dates. The kernel update may have killed your wireless connection.

So I suggest booting the previous kernel version which is kernel version 4.2.0-27-generic.

You can switch to a previous kernel version (4.2.0-27-generic) during boot by accessing the grub menu.

The simplest way to display the Grub boot menu is to press and hold the SHIFT button while booting.

Thanks, no joy though. I've backed up to 27 generic but still no network device found

OK, if you want more help, you will need to send us the FULL Terminal output, not just the last part of the output.

So please enable unlimited scrolling in the Terminal as explained in step 1 in the following procedure:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure

Then send us the FULL Terminal output from step 2 in that procedure.

Please post the output here:

Hi, I think that's the full result.

No ,it isn't the full output....

You gave the output of THIS command:

dmesg | grep -E '02:00|80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rror|rtl|RTL|rt2|RT2|rt3|RT3|rt5|RT5|rt6|RT6|rt7|RT7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|grep -E 'anufact|roduct|erial|elease'; iwconfig; grep -E '80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl' /etc/modprobe.d/*; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|grep -E 'wpa|icd|etwork'; netstat -rn ; cat /etc/resolv.conf; ls -lia /boot; grep tmpfs /etc/fstab; ubuntu-support-status; sudo update-pciids; sudo update-usbids; sudo lsmod

The troubleshooting procedure asks you to send us the output of THIS command:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install usbutils pciutils hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scan | grep -Ei 'chan|ssid'; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net; lsusb; nmcli nm status; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; sudo updatedb; dmesg | grep -E '02:00|80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rror|rtl|RTL|rt2|RT2|rt3|RT3|rt5|RT5|rt6|RT6|rt7|RT7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|grep -E 'anufact|roduct|erial|elease'; iwconfig; grep -E '80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl' /etc/modprobe.d/*; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|grep -E 'wpa|icd|etwork'; netstat -rn ; cat /etc/resolv.conf; ls -lia /boot; grep tmpfs /etc/fstab; ubuntu-support-status; sudo update-pciids; sudo update-usbids; sudo lsmod

Anyway...... Send the missing piece which is the output of

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install usbutils pciutils hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scan | grep -Ei 'chan|ssid'; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net; lsusb; nmcli nm status; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; sudo updatedb

Please first run this Terminal command:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Using the gedit editor, scroll down and ADD this configuration line:

blacklist bcma
blacklist b43

Save the changes to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file.

Then run these 3 Terminal commands in a Terminal using the working, wireless USB adapter:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` dkms build-essential bcmwl-kernel-source

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-`uname -r` dkms build-essential bcmwl-kernel-source

Then reboot your PC and retest wireless.
