Unable to connect Wi-fi - Dell Latitude D520 - Xubuntu 14.04

Asked by OmegaPaladin

I have had recurring trouble connecting to Wi-Fi with my Dell Latitude D520 running Xubuntu 14.04 installed to disk.
I have a BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN wi-fi installed and a BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX Ethernet card.

I've tried a complete fresh install, and also tried installing the BCMWL proprietary drivers, which tend to lock up my computer and kill my wired Ethernet connection without enabling my wireless driver I had to uninstall them and reinstall b44 with modprobe to get some level of Internet back.

Here is the full command output from the command string in the Wi-Fi guide on the wiki.

More specifically, I installed firmware-b43-installer, switched to the driver b43 with modprobe, then restarted.

I had tried this before, but BCMWL I believe blacklisted the driver.
