That will work on an installed version of Ubuntu 14.04 but it won't work with Ubuntu 15.10 or a kernel higher than 3.19.

For an installed version of 15.10 you would to manually install the backports, set the skip_otp parameter and extract the firmware from the dkms deb package

This is my first time using a linux os ti manually install do I download the file and put it somewhere in the os file system?

Try:

ch $HOME
wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/nmgb5li6sd6i7ij/backath10k-dkms_2.0_all.deb
dpkg -i backath10k-dkms_2.0_all.deb

Alternatively (easier) install the 4.4 kernel from the mainline PPA then add the firmware file using the last group of commands.

The dkms might install the firmware but fail to build the modules. I think I put the firmware transfer and parameter setting in preinstall.

The github recently gave me a not found

The github site for the firmware is back up, so using the second method from my askubuntu answer should work with an installed Ubuntu 15.10, use terminal and enter one line at a time

echo "options ath10k_core skip_otp=y" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath10k_core.conf
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
wget https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/2015/11/20/backports-20151120.tar.gz
tar -zxvf backports-20151120.tar.gz
cd backports-20151120
make defconfig-ath10k
make
sudo make install
cd
git clone https://github.com/atondwal/ath10k-firmware.git
sudo cp -r ath10k-firmware/ath10k/ /lib/firmware/
cd /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6164
sudo cp -r hw2.1/ /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174

Reboot

The third command starts with wget and ends with .tar.gz to download the backports

After a kernel update you might not have wifi after a reboot until you

cd backports-20151120
make clean
make defconfig-ath10k
make
sudo make install

Reboot
