ath9k wireless kernel module not loading automatically during boot -> UNCLAIMED Wireless Network controller [0280]: Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0032] (rev 01) not working on ASUS X551CA (ASUS-NotebookSKU) in Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS

Asked by Inga

Hi,
I've recently run an update on Ubuntu 14.04 and since then my WiFi doesn't work anymore. I had the same problem before, right after I installed Ubuntu as a dual boot system on my laptop (Asus F551C), but could work around it using these commands:
lspci -nnk | grep -A2 0280
lsmod | grep -e ath9k -e asus
rfkill list all
Then, after a restart, it would show me the option to connect to a wireless. however, there seems to be no ath9k anymore, nothing appears after the second command. This is the output of:
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install usbutils pciutils hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scan | grep -Ei 'chan|ssid'; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net; lsusb; nmcli nm status; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; sudo updatedb; dmesg | grep -E '02:00|80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rror|rtl|RTL|rt2|RT2|rt3|RT3|rt5|RT5|rt6|RT6|rt7|RT7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|grep -E 'anufact|roduct|erial|elease'; iwconfig; grep -E '80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl' /etc/modprobe.d/*; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|grep -E 'wpa|icd|etwork'; netstat -rn ; cat /etc/resolv.conf; ls -lia /boot; grep tmpfs /etc/fstab; ubuntu-support-status; sudo update-pciids; sudo update-usbids; sudo lsmod

Thanks!

Grab the 4.1 kernel and it will have the driver by default

Try this before installing the 4.1 kernel

sudo modprobe -v ath9k

Post any errors

First make sure that wireless is still enabled in the BIOS.

I also suggest running these commands using a working, WIRED, Internet connection:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/asus_nb_wmi.conf

sudo dpkg --configure -a

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then reboot and choose an older Linux kernel.

It could be that the latest kernel update caused your wireless to stop working.

Boot into a previous kernel version after running the 4 commands I just mentioned.

@Inga: does wireless still work after rebooting your computer?

Hi Mark,
No it doesn't actually, thanks for checking. Didnt try retarting yesterday - typing in the same command and it's working again but it would be good to get it working fully. What do you suggest?
Thanks!

Read this:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/13791/modprobe-ath9k-at-startup

Run this command

sudo nano /etc/modules

Put

ath9k

on the very last line of the /etc/modules configuration file to force your PC to load the ath9k kernel module during each boot.

Inga, what happens if you run

sudo dpkg --configure -a

You must have had an issue updating because your kernel is 3 months old

It's up and running after each restart now. Thanks a million!
