Asked by Korrigan Nagirrok

Trying to get wireless in an old HP G7000 laptop to no avail. Already installed firmware-b43-installer but still nothing.

Here's what I've done so far:
sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
sudo modprobe -r b43
sudo modprobe b43

And output of what is now:
~$ grep 'blacklist b43' /etc/modprobe.d/*

Your Terminal output shows the following error message:

[ 29.296954] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode13.fw" not found

The following query

http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=vivid&arch=any&mode=exactfilename&searchon=contents&keywords=ucode13.fw

shows that Ubuntu 15.04 (which is not ready for use yet!) does not have any Ubuntu package yet that contains the Broadcom firmware file ucode13.fw

However, the following query

http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=trusty&arch=any&mode=exactfilename&searchon=contents&keywords=ucode13.fw

shows that Ubuntu 14.04 LTS does have that firmware file.

So you need to install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and then install the Ubuntu package linux-firmware-nonfree using a working, wirED Internet connection to get support for your wireless adapter.

You should not be using 15.04 anyway, unless you know how to solve this type of issue yourself..... 15.04 is not officially released yet, so you can expect all kinds of issues in a pre-release version.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is supported until April 2019.

@Mark Rijckenberg (markrijckenberg):
I already tried it with 14.04.1 LTS with the same results, i.e., not getting wireless.

Another thing if I run sudo ls /lib/firmware/b43 | grep ucode13.fw I get as output ucode13.fw

Doesn't that means that the firmware file is preent?

@actionparsnip (andrew-woodhead666):
If you read carefully my first post you see I already tried the suggested solution for this wifi card

Please send us the output of the following command, while running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS from a harddisk/SSD :

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install usbutils pciutils hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scan | egrep -i 'chan|ssid'; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net; lsusb; nmcli nm status; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; sudo updatedb; dmesg | egrep '02:00|80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rror|rtl|RTL|rt2|RT2|rt3|RT3|rt5|RT5|rt6|RT6|rt7|RT7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'anufact|roduct|erial|elease'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl'; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'wpa|icd|etwork'; netstat -rn ; cat /etc/resolv.conf; ls -lia /boot; grep tmpfs /etc/fstab; ubuntu-support-status; sudo update-pciids; sudo update-usbids; sudo lsmod

I can only provide support for 14.04 LTS, not 15.04, which has not even been released yet....

Ok Mark Rijckenberg (markrijckenberg) I'm going to prepare a USB flash drive with 14.04.1 LTS, boot the laptop with it and the will post the output you're requesting.

It's a lot of output. As a heads up I've masked the IPs from the netstat command and from the DNS conf file because of privace concerns.

Please carefully reread posts #2 and #5.

I do not see any evidence that my advice was followed.

Post #2 asks you to " install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and then install the Ubuntu package linux-firmware-nonfree using a working, wirED Internet connection to get support for your wireless adapter." -> not done

Post #5 asks you again to run 14.04 LTS from a harddisk/SSD -> also not done

Furthermore, it was entirely unnecessary to split my single command into lots of pieces....

The commands I sent you, will not destroy your computer.

This is why I STILL see the following error message in your Terminal output in 14.04 LTS:

"[ 29.418419] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode13.fw" not found"

Mark Rijckenberg (markrijckenberg) the reason why the system is running from a LiveISO instead of a HDD is because I'm trying to triage if the wireless will work, before formatting the drive and installing Xubuntu on it.

Do you think that there's no chance to check this without rebooting the live session or without installing Xubuntu on the drive?

If you absolutely need to test via a LiveUSB session, I suggest testing via Linux Mint, because I THINK that the wireless firmware files are included out-of-the-box on a Linux Mint LiveUSB image, but not on the Ubuntu LiveUSB image.

You could have tested wireless from an Ubuntu LiveUSB session, but only if your wireless adapter did not require the install of separate firmware files. That is not the case here.

However, if you encounter issues with Linux Mint, remember that we do not provide support here for Linux Mint. We only provide support for Ubuntu,Lubuntu,Xubuntu.....

Normally you need to reboot your PC after installing the linux-firmware-nonfree Ubuntu package.

However, if you install the linux-firmware-nonfree package during a LiveUSB session where it does not use persistent storage, any changes (like installing the linux-firmware-nonfree package) are lost after rebooting your PC. That is why I insisted on having you test wireless from harddisk or SSD.

They are not included in Linux Mint for the same reason they aren't included with Ubuntu, a post here with the same issue trying Live version of LM http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=189394

And linux-firmware-nonfree has not had the b43 firmware since August 2014, changelog- http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/multiverse/l/linux-firmware-nonfree/linux-firmware-nonfree_1.14ubuntu3/changelog

I don't understand why the following command

apt-file list linux-firmware-nonfree | grep ucode13

gives incorrect output and why the website

http://packages.ubuntu.com/

also gives incorrect information about the contents of linux-firmware-nonfree

Strange.....

Jeremy: you are right....

@ Mark Rijckenberg (markrijckenberg):
Thanks for your all the help and knowledge you provided me.

@ Jeremy (wa113y3s):
Thanks for stepping in and input.

I guess I have no other choice than take a leap of faith and install Xubuntu on the laptop. The first thing I'll is to install firmware-b43-installer and reboot (keeping my fingers crossed the all time).

I'll get back to report how it all end up.

Ok, I went ahead and did a full install of Xubuntu 14.04.1 and upon boot the wireless worked as expected.
