1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Hard blocked: yes -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:002b] (rev 01) not working on Compaq Presario CQ61 Notebook PC (VX306PA#ABG) in Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
After updated to 14.04LTS I have not been able to establish a WIFI connect to my laptop. previuos version worked fine with wifi and settings remained the same after update but Settings/
Ethernet connection works fine as do the applications.
My Laptop is a compaq, and the system settings show the following:
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II Dual-Core M320*2
Graphics: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV710
OS Type: 32-bit
Disk: 310.7 GB
I am a novice user of Ubuntu so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your Terminal output shows the following issue:
*-network DISABLED
description: Wireless interface
product: AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express)
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any
=======
So your wireless card is disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a combination of these factors...
There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"
Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....
In the BIOS, verify that wireless is enabled.
Then, in the BIOS, perform a factory reset (in the BIOS).
Hopefully, this will enable the wireless again.
Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill state of your wireless chipset:
rfkill unblock all
sudo rfkill unblock all
If that does not help, then I suggest blacklisting the hp_wmi kernel module.
First run this command:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
Using the gedit editor, scroll down and add the following configuration line:
blacklist hp_wmi
Save the change to the /etc/modprobe.
Then REBOOT your PC and retest wireless.

rfkill unblock all and sudo rfkill unblock all, have done the job, WIFI connection has been established. Thankyou very much for the excellent response time and help in solving my problem.
