Wifi (Disabled by hardware switch) Wifi button (Does not work) Lubuntu/HP Laptop/AR242x / AR542xAT

Asked by Malic

I'm a Lubuntu end user with little knowledge on Terminal workarounds. EG When I tried fixing my problem from solutions on the net, I'm afraid I could have changed my Wifi drivers; however I could not trace my correct drivers from websites, and If I did, I doubt I'd have a clue as to how to install them.

After Lubuntu instal, Wifi-button(ON/blue OFF/Red) never worked but wifi worked. When I installed 'kde-nm-connection-editor' and created a 'Hot Spot', it worked the first time. Thereafter I always got 'Wifi is disabled by hardware switch'. After a week or so of tinkering around (I wish I could tell you exactly what I've done, but its so much, from so many sources-including several new installs), I'm afraid I could have made my problem worse.

In addition, any assistance to resolve my 'Update/Upgrade' errors (Ign)... Or any other errors that you've noted, which I haven't.... would be appreciated.

Finally, If there's any way to minimise the Spinning Noise, other than blowing the dust, do tell.

Please help.

Does the system have a switch to enable / disable wifi?
Do you dual boot the system?

@actionparsnip... Yes it does. But switch has never worked since I installed Lubuntu

Try:

sudo rfkill unblock all

Then try the wifi.

Didn't work. It's also one of the things I'd tried earlier before writting. Didn't work then, doesn't work now.
t
The switch doesn't ON/OFF, remains blue all along. The Wifi on System tray still shows 'Wifi disabled by a hardware switch'

I'm sorry if this is a silly suggestion, but where exactly can I get my wifi drivers, and how exactly do I install them?

On some HP models with loaded hp-wmi. The WiFi activation key is not Fn+F?? but Alt+F?? (usually Alt+F12). You should try that.
If not successful, try to remove hp-wmi:

sudo modprobe -r hp-wmi

and then try both combination again.

Thanks @Thomas. What I did was a fresh install of Lubuntu. Unfortunately, wireless was still 'Disabled by a hardware switch'.
I 'sudo rfkill unblock all', it didn't work.
Tried 'Alt+F12' it didn't work. (Though this laptop has a wifi-switch).
'sudo modprobe -r hp-wmi', still didn't work.
After that, I re-tried both the switch and 'Alt+F12', still doesn't work
:-(

Some further ideas that might help:

Try repeatedly pressing the Fn-Fxx key for enabling Wifi early during booting
Check if there is anything in the BIOS setup dialogue with respect to Wifi that can be changed
Enter BIOS setup and reload defaults

Thanks @Manfred. Repeatedly pressing the wifi switch during bootup sometimes works, sometimes doesn't work. There must be a solution that works completely, no?

There is a known problem, that some computer manufacturers provide the programs to switch on/off the wlan (and other) devices only for Windows OS, and do not publish the information that would be required to create a Linux program for this function.

So we can only recommend that you try getting the Wlan device enabled once, and then do not disable it with the Fn-Fx key any more, but just disable it software-wise with the network management applet.
