Wireless Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 [8086:08b2] (rev 73) can detect but cannot connect to wireless access point using Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 15.6-Inch Laptop in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Asked by jrperry on 2014-07-14

Hello,
I'm am a little new to Ubuntu but this is the second computer I have had using it. My new labtop has been duel booted with windows 8 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. While windows has no issue with the wifi, I can't seem to get ubuntu to connect. I have spent a couple days searching google to find a solution and have come up short. I have also followed the wireless troubleshooting guide on the ubuntu site with no success.

What does seem to work is the hardware. I can see that the symbol for the wireless antennae in the top righthand corner, so that is working. the computer can also see the routers nearby, including my own. when I try to connect, it asks for the wifi password and I put it in. I even make sure to make it visible so I can see what I'm typing. I have done this a couple dozen times so that is not the issue.

The only thing that I can think to do is to post the output from the diagnostic tool from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure.

And here it is, please help! thanks:

There are a lot of networks nearby which doesn't help. You are seeing them though which means that the wireless chip is ok. Try the below command:

echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf > /dev/null

Reboot to test

jrperry (jrperry) said : #2

tried it, still can't connect. any other ideas?

What is the name of your wireless access point?

Thomas Krüger (thkrueger) said : #4

The AP does not give any response. It could be not working properly, or there is a MAC filter active (only registered devices allowed).

jrperry (jrperry) said : #5

The wireless acces point is TWC242.

There shouldn't be a MAC filter. I can get on the wifi when i boot windows, would there be a different MAC address for linux and windows boots on the same computer?

The MAC address is set on the hardware when manufactured so will be identical between OSes.

Please first connect your PC to your wireless router using a LAN/ethernet cable.

Then I suggest logging into the wireless router using a webbrowser and
then:

1) enabling SSID broadcasting to make sure the access point is not hidden anymore
2) forcing the wireless router to use wireless-G (54 Mbps) speeds for troubleshooting purposes
3) changing the wireless transmission channel to channel 3

Then reboot the router and your PC and retest wireless.

jrperry (jrperry) said : #8

Thanks Mark Rijckenberg, that solved my question.

jrperry (jrperry) said : #9

Thanks everyone for your help. I changed the wireless transmission channel and now I can connect. Is there any reason why that helped?

Probably too much wireless interference from the other wireless access points when your router was still using the previous channel.
