Wireless won't turn on in ubuntu - HP G5000

Asked by Laura

Hi,
I installed ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop as a dual boot a couple of days ago, but can't connect to wifi. The wireless is enabled by a switch above the keyboard but this is unresponsive - it had been permanenly off but today (after I updated windows) it is constantly blue, but still hasn't changed my problem.
There is no wireless networking option in my connections menu on the top-rh corner of the screen.
I can connect to the ethernet but can't figure out how to make the wireless work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

The following procedure applies to all supported releases of Ubuntu that are NOT End of Life (EOL) in the following table:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable) and apply all updates.

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1

In the Ubuntu Terminal console , make sure that unlimited scrolling is enabled:

click on Edit > Profiles > "Default" profile > Scrolling. Choose "Unlimited" as scrolling option. Click Close and Close again.

If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

If you are using the Unity interface (default graphical user interface in Ubuntu), use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.

So the methods in Unity are:

Press CTRL-ALT-T key combination.

Dash > Search for Terminal

Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal

Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal

Step 2

Please copy-paste the following diagnostic command from the

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure

website using a web browser (like Google Chromium or Mozilla Firefox) into the Linux Terminal. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word lsmod. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE diagnostic command below from the web browser into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the diagnostic command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scan | egrep -i 'chan|ssid'; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net; lsusb; nmcli nm status; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; sudo updatedb; dmesg | egrep '02:00|80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rror|rtl|RTL|rt2|RT2|rt3|RT3|rt5|RT5|rt6|RT6|rt7|RT7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'anufact|roduct|erial|elease'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl'; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'wpa|icd|etwork'; netstat -rn ; cat /etc/resolv.conf; ls -lia /boot; grep tmpfs /etc/fstab; ubuntu-support-status; sudo lsmod

Step 3

Please do NOT attempt to send any attachment(s). Please copy/paste the full terminal output at this location: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/246869

The troubleshooters at Launchpad need to see the full Terminal output from running the above diagnostic command.

Step 4

Please also specify the name of the wireless access point that you are trying to connect to (not the model/make of your router).

Your Terminal output shows the following issue:

[ 17.103886] wl driver 6.20.155.1 (r326264) failed with code 21
[ 17.103918] kernel BUG at include/net/cfg80211.h:3001!

You will first need a working, wiRED Internet connection in order to able to install the correct wireless driver (b43 driver)

Using a working, wired Internet connection, please copy-paste the following 3 commands into the Terminal to use the b43 driver instead of the non-working wl driver:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer b43-fwcutter

Then REBOOT your PC and retest wireless.

In the Windows device manager (in Windows, not Ubuntu), make sure to disable the power management feature on the wireless adapter. Then reboot into Ubuntu.

Then retest wireless.

I have no further suggestions to make.

First, let me say I'm NOT a geek, so what I have to say is a "take it or leave it" kinda deal. Since the onset of 12.04, your particular difficulty is only the beginning. LET ME STRESS, these are MY opinions! I too, had difficulty getting the wireless to work after installing 12.04. This is an inherent problem and should never be. Check all the forums and count the number of folks echoing this failure w/12.04. Personally, ditch 12.04!! I did!! There are much BETTER Linux distros. I (and many others) fought 12.04 at just about EVERYTHING I tried to do. Believe me, it's a long, long list of problems!! I haven't tried the new 14.04(and am not going to), but IF I were you, I'd check out either LinuxMint16 or the lastest PINGUY disto if you want to 'experience" LINUX O.S.'s Next, it has been my experience that most problems with Linux/Ubuntu are USUALLY 'fixed" with one or possibly 2 operations. I'd be wary of going through multiple steps/commands and/or fixes. That is usally a dangerous way to attempt fixing Linux.. I'm NOT here trying to 'rag" anyone or their opinion, I'm just trying to help a "newbie" with what has been my experiences with 12.04 (its a P.O.S.)!!. I hope you find a distro that's to your liking. I think LINUX is the way to go! Just don't go w/ 12.04!! MY OPINION(S)!!!!!!!!!!!! [Now...let's see how many folks get pissed!! LOL] One last thing, ...should you remove any linux distro from you HDD, be aware that removing Linux (in dual install of O.S.;s) also removes the GRUB, thus your MSWindows will not operate until you re-install the GRUB!! I'm NOT anti-Linux, but I am anti 12.04!!!!
Good Luck Laura;
RICK

Thank you both for your help - unfortunately your way didn't work Mark but I'd say it's just my computer and would work for everybody else, so thanks again for your time.
Rick I'd say I'll follow your advice - thanks (and I learned about the grub thing the hard way yesterday so had to reinstall ubuntu just to start up the blasted thing!).
Thanks again,
Laura :)
