I suspect that your wireless adapter is experiencing the following bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1172151/

First try installing the asus-wmi-dkms_1.0_all.deb file located here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1172151/comments/28

Then reboot and retest.

If that does not solve the issue, then please use the following workaround:

Open a Terminal and copy-paste this command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Using the gedit editor, SCROLL down and add this configuration line at the end of the file:

blacklist asus-nb-wmi

Save your modifications.

This modification ensures that the asus-nb-wmi kernel module does not start during boot and does not interfere anymore with your wireless adapter.

Then reboot and retest.

Before I saw this reply I found another page:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2181558
and the fix there worked:
echo "options asus_nb_wmi wapf=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/asus_nb_wmi.conf

Should I still try the suggested deb instead?

I would keep it as is, if it works now.

If you start changing things again, it could always break something else....

Please set the thread status to "solved", if the issue is now solved.

Thanks.

Just for testing I reverted the wapf=1 fix, installed the deb file but I got no wlan again.

So I'm now back to using the wapf=1 fix and it works fine, so I consider this problem solved.

Status: wlan works at boot, but Fn+F2 still does not toggle wlan (but that is not really a problem for me).

Patrix , thank you for your comments. bug 1172151 is already fixed for Saucy, and closed. Hence, if you still have a problem, then your bug is not covered under the scope of that report. If you would like your bug addressed in Ubuntu (without utilizing WORKAROUNDs), you would want to file a new report by executing the following in a terminal while booted into a Ubuntu repository kernel (not a mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux

For more on this, please read the official Ubuntu documentation:
Ubuntu Bug Control and Ubuntu Bug Squad: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/BestPractices#X.2BAC8-Reporting.Focus_on_One_Issue
Ubuntu Kernel Team: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Filing_Kernel_Bug_reports
Ubuntu Community: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette

When opening up the new report, please feel free to subscribe me to it.

Thank you for your understanding.
