Having a Very difficult time connecting to wireless

Asked by kilian barker on 2013-12-23

Hi there, For starters, I hope I'm posting in the correct place and abiding by proper etiquitte. Im still relativley new to Ubuntu, But I have certainly been learning from these "puzzles" .

I am attempting to Connect to internet through a wireless USB adapter with very limited succes. I have a Dell latitute c610 laptop with 512mb of RAM.
I used the Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS alternate CD to install a command line interface to the hard-drive, with Fluxbox as my window manager.
My attempts have been mainly focused around WICD.
I can see the ESSID but when I try to connect to it, it either says "bad password: connection failed" Or it freezes and doesn't say anything. From there it usualy says "no wireless connections found" until I reboot.
I am not perticularly set on using WICD, and would be willing to use a suitible alternative if that were the issue.

I have read that perhaps rolling wicd back to 1.6.2.2 would solve my issue. However, finding a repository and sucsesfully aquireing the older version hasn't worked form me either. In synaptic when I click "force version" I'm not presented with any older options. I must be doing something wrong? .

Also I have tried generating the psk instead of a passphrase.

I have gone through the toubleshooting lacking any epiphanys.

at this point I feel like some assistance would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have included the recomended out put from :

Please read this:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1152861

I suggest booting from the Ubuntu 13.10 Desktop 32bit
LiveCD/LiveUSB and testing if everything - including wireless - is working using
Ubuntu 13.10. If it works in the LiveCD session, then install 13.10 from
LiveCD.

kilian barker (weaselfactory) said : #2

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the Reply,
I'm currently reading through the Link and further links therein.
I just made the Live CD and will give it a shot.

kilian barker (weaselfactory) said : #3

I have done the md5sums, made a live CD, tested the CD on my Desktop computer and all is well. The USB wireless adapter works in that environment.
However when I attempt to boot my laptop from the CD I get no success, just a blinking underscore that goes now further. I have suspicions that the minimum requirements for 13.10 exceed the capabilities of my laptop.
I read the link you provided. Should I be doing the apport-collect command for this issue?
Perhaps there are some Feilds I have left blank, or configuration I've overlooked? Things evident to others than myself?
A nudge in the right direction as to what to read/Do, would be lovely.

Yes, it seems I overlooked the fact that your laptop has 512MB of RAM. :-)

I suggest trying Lubuntu 13.10 Desktop 32bit instead....

The minimum system requirements for Lubuntu are a Pentium II or Celeron CPU with PAE support, 128 MB of RAM and at least 2 GB of hard-drive space. This release also still supports PowerPC architecture, requiring a G4 867 MHz processor and 640 MB of RAM minimum.[77]

kilian barker (weaselfactory) said : #5

Ok thanks, I don't have any CDs with me right now but I will go get some and give it a try.

kilian barker (weaselfactory) said : #6

An Update on Progress.
I found some CDs, made the Lubuntu Live disk. Confirmed that it works on my desktop with my wireless adapter, then tried to make it work on my laptop. It wouldnt work right away but I figured out the issue.
However once I succsessfully booted up lubuntu, my wireless still doesn't work. It can see the ESSID but it wont "assosiate". The "iwlist wlan0 scan" command gives me the expected result occasionaly but most of the time says "no scan results".

Is this laptop internally flawed/Damaged?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask kilian barker for more information if necessary.
