RTL8192 conflict

Asked by Simon Learoyd

I am trying to use an Edimax EW-7811Un wireless USB on Ubuntu 12.10. If I run the Realtek installation script, and then plug the USB adapter in, it works. If I reload the PC, I can connect to my wireless network, but it cannot resolve hosts. If I plug an older wireless USB stick in, it works.

If you get connected with no connection, can you ping 8.8.8.8 in a terminal?

Hi, just upgrading to 13.04 to see if that release resolves the issue, will reply when it is finished

Well, the upgrade has not helped. Either I get unable to respolve host, or repeated requests for passkey for the router. A ping of 8.8.8.8 gets Destination unreachable. I have read the posts on running the Realtek script and blocking the driver, but that last step just renders the USB dongle inert (no blue flashing light). I think I am going backwards!

According to this thread

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/852190/comments/176

you need to install and use kernel version 3.11.0-13-generic or newer to get support for the Edimax EW-7811Un wireless USB adapter....

Don't forget to install the linux-firmware Ubuntu package after installing kernel 3.11.0-13-generic or newer.

The rtl8192cu wireless driver needs /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin which is part of the linux-firmware Ubuntu package.

OK I have upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10, kernel 3.11.0-13, and the rtl8192cufw.bin file is where it should be.
But I am still either at repeated passkey requests, or if I can get it to connect at all , it sits in "Resolving Host".

If I plug in an old USB wi-fi dongle, it connects and works. But the Edimax will not.

Anybody got any ideas?

OK, so I started with a clean install of 12.04, upgraded tp 12.10, got the latest Realtek driver, installed it, blaclisted the old driver all as per this thread:

http://www.r-statistics.com/2011/11/edimax-ew-7811un-usb-wireless-connecting-to-a-network-on-ubuntu-11-10/

And it worked! Although it stopped working soon after. So I disconnected and reconnected.

Hope it continues to work!

Thanks for your help guys
