ath5k module blacklisted -> UNCLAIMED Wireless Ethernet controller [0200]: Qualcomm Atheros AR242x / AR542x Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:001c] (rev 01) not working on ACER AOA150 (Napa_Fab5) in Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS

Asked by Bryan

Machine = Acer Aspire one ZG5 ( unbuntu 12.04 on the hard disc )
lspci -nn = 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR242x / AR542x Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

I have never been able to get the wireless network to work though it does under Linpus Lite (dual boot) and if you boot from a USB stick with 12.04 on it.
Strangely when booting from the USB the card shows up as Atheros Communications not Qualcomm Atheros.

I have tried to get help on the Ubuntu forum but have had no suggestions after a week.
Need help please.
Bryan.

The difference between the 2 pieces of Terminal output is pretty clear.

The first output (from the harddisk install) shows this issue:

blacklist ath9k
#blacklist ath9k
#blacklist ath5k
blacklist ath9k
blacklist ath5k
# which ath5k cannot recover. To prevent this condition, stop
blacklist ath5k

So the ath5k module is blacklisted twice in configuration file(s) on your harddisk.

This wireless module is not deactivated/not blacklisted on your USB when it boots.
Because ath5k is active on the USB boot, wireless works in that case.

So you simply need to delete the configuration lines containing

blacklist ath5k

on your harddisk install.

There are two occurrences of that configuration line, according to the Terminal output above.

You can determine which configuration files are blacklisting module ath5k by running this command:

grep ath5k /etc/modprobe.d/*

You can edit a configuration file with a command similar to this one:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

where you replace blacklist.conf with the right filename.

Once the changes are saved, reboot your PC and retest wireless.

It should work.

Hi Mark
Thanks for you input.

I'm afraid I need to be led by the hand when it comes to these commands.

When I tried "grep ath5k /etc/modprobe.d/*" all that happened was the cursor went to the next line and flashed for a short time then stayed on.

Then you need to inspect the contents of each file in /etc/modprobe.d/

I already explained how to edit a file using gedit.

What I don't understand is this : who added the blacklist ath5 lines in the first place, if you do not know how to remove them??

Someone must have put them there in the first place....

Did you do the install or someone else??

Hi Mark
This netbook belongs to the Malvern Hang Gliding club. Ubuntu was put onto it some years ago, not by me, I know that wifi never worked even though there were attempt to do so. So that is probable when blacklisting occurred.

Anyway I found the 2 files that had the blacklistings.

Using the command "gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/file name" would not open them so I just did "gksudo gedit" then navigated to them to make the changes.

Wifi now working.

Thank you very much for you help.

Bryan.
