Typo: Ubuntu version is 12.04.3 SE (not 12.10 SE as I posted in my question)

Try:

sudo rfkill unblock all

Do you dual boo the system?

1. No dual boot. Only Ubuntu OS. When I bought the netbook it had FreeDOS on it, but during Ubuntu installation, I did a full erase & Ubuntu-only installation. As I said before, DURING installation Wifi worked, I could see the wifi signal indicator on screen and was able to download updates during installation.

2. rfkill unblock as no effect. phy0: Wireless LAN still shows Hardblocked: yes.

See status before and after:

amit@amit-1015E:~$ rfkill list all
0: asus-wlan: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no
1: asus-bluetooth: Bluetooth
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: no
2: phy0: Wireless LAN

amit@amit-1015E:~$ sudo rfkill unblock all
[sudo] password for amit:

amit@amit-1015E:~$ rfkill list all

Run this command in a Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/asus.conf

Using the gedit editor, scroll down and add the following configuration line:

options asus_nb_wmi wapf=4

Save the change to the file.

Then reboot and retest wireless.

This setting worked! Thanks a ton Mark. Appreciate your help!

I hope this takes care of the issue permanently.

Yes its permanent due to the file you made. I suggest you make a backup copy of the file so you can reinstate it if you reinstall.

Will the same setting also work if I upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10 in future, and face this problem?

Regards,
Amit

Normally, it should work. But I don't use the same hardware as you.... So I cannot be 100% sure. You will need to test it.

On Ubuntu 13.10 it works out of the box, but wifi LED doesn't light up and Fn+F2 combination doesn't work either. Furthermore, my USB modem Huawei E173 which used to work on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, does not work in Ubuntu 13.10. Hope someone is working on this issue because many of us need those services to work. I sadly must say both services run smoothly on W7.
