Wireless not working on Ubuntu 12.04 on Dell Inspiron 15 3521

Asked by Sirius

My device is a Dell Inspiron 15 3521. It came with WIndoes 8 pre-installed. I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a separate hard disk partition. WIreless is not working on it.

I first tried by installing the Broadcom STA wireless driver. When that didn't work, I followed some steps given on a forum to remove it and install b43 firmware instead. That didn't help either.

Here are the relevant terminal outputs

lspci -nn | grep 0280

02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. Device [168c:0036] (rev 01)

And the entire output for the following command

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scan | egrep -i 'chan|ssid'; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net; lsusb; nmcli nm status; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; sudo updatedb; dmesg | egrep '02:00|80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rror|rtl|RTL|rt2|RT2|rt3|RT3|rt5|RT5|rt6|RT6|rt7|RT7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'anufact|roduct|erial|elease'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl'; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'wpa|icd|etwork'; netstat -rn ; cat /etc/resolv.conf; ls -lia /boot; grep tmpfs /etc/fstab; ubuntu-support-status; sudo lsmod

Seems to be a AR9485 chip.

If you run:

sudo modprobe ath9k

Does it start working?

No, it doesn't. Is a reboot required?

No, or it will undo what you did. This isn't Windows. You don't need to reboot your PC every 4 seconds to do things. The only real time you need to reboot is to load a new kernel..

i may suggest that the problem might be caused by windows wireless setup.i faced it before and if you put in windows the option -available to all users- it might work.regards
