BCM4322 Macbook Pro not connecting to wifi after updating driver information

Asked by sal deniz

Using a MacBook Pro (Ubuntu 13.04) and the wireless does not detect any wifi connectons. I tried connecting using the hidden wifi connection and still doesnt work. This appears to be a common problem with broadcom and tried some web solutions online -- had no success. Ubuntu is installed on the harddrive.

I'm new to linux. I just followed those steps. How can I try and reinstall it?

Hello,

open a terminal and try

  sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
  sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
  sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
  sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

Then reboot your PC.

If is not working,
then try to re-install the bcmwl driver with

  sudo apt-get install bcwml-kernel-source

Do not try to load the driver immediately . Probably you will need to restart once again.

Regards
 NikTh

Hello NikTh,

I tried your suggestion -- unfortunately, it didn't work. I reinstalled driver (I believe you had a typo: changed bcwml -> bcmwl)

I restarted and still no success.

Do you have Internet access at all ? (ethernet cable)

If yes, then try the following commands and post here full results

    wget "https://www.dropbox.com/s/8wp9mfdmt1itu1n/wirelessinfo" -O ~/wirelessinfo.sh
    chmod +x wirelessinfo.sh
    sudo ./wirelessinfo.sh

Last command will produce a file with name : netinfo.txt

Open it (with a text editor) and post here the full results

Regards
 NikTh

Yes, I have internet. I'm checking the post with my ipad right next to my macbook pro. The wireless device works because when I boot into Mac OS the wifi works. I plugged in the ethernet cable and followed your instructions.

Thank you for your assistance. Here is the content of the file:

OK, first the wireless interface is wrong (eth1). Must be wlan0.

Do something

  sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source

Reboot your PC and run again the script

  sudo ./wirelessinfo.sh

copy-paste here the new netinfo.txt (for comparison)

Regards
 NikTh

P.S : Another solution could be to stick to the old kernel, where wireless worked. If this is a kernel-headers problem , then it should be work with the old kernel.

If you mean ubuntu 12.x as old kernel, the reason I upgraded to this version is because ubuntu has problems reading the nvidia graphic card and I was unable to fix that. MacBook Pro's appear to be very problematic w/ linux.

If you run :

sudo modprobe -r b43

And get no output then run:

sudo modprobe wl

Also without output, does the wifi work ok?

I was wondering if this was an installation problem so I actually reinstalled ubuntu 13.04 and went through the steps I've been told in this thread -- same problem.

Maybe I was typing it wrong.
sudo modprobe wl
Produces no output and same problem

Hello,

by "older kernel" I mean the kernel only. Not the whole version of Ubuntu. When you boot you see the grub menu first , right ?

From menu "Advanced options for Ubuntu" you can select a previous kernel version to boot from. e.g: 3.8.0-29 (now you are in 3.8.0-30) .

Also it would be good to test the latest mainline kernel (from Saucy - 13.10) and see if wireless work there.

Read here about mainline kernels
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds

The latest stable is
 v3.11.2-saucy/ 27-Sep-2013 01:54

Less than one month the Saucy (13.10) will be released and you will be able to upgrade. (the whole Ubuntu version).

 NikTh

If you run 13.04 from LiveCD and install the broadcom driver, is it ok?

Not sure how to do that. Boot from the LiveCD and then how do I find the drivers?

Please download and test Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander [1]

If the problem exists there also, then report a bug before the stable release (October 17th)
