laptop release date: 05/20/2013 -> UNCLAIMED Wireless Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188EE Wireless Network Adapter [10ec:8179] (rev 01) not working on TOSHIBA Satellite C55D-A (PSCFWU) in Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS

Asked by Andreas Matern

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite C55D-A5208. Installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS today. I am unable to get wireless to work. My wireless card is an RTL8188EE. I've tried following the troubleshooting advice from the ubuntu forums (and today added my own question there) to no avail. I'm following the instructions from: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure

Appending the output from the command(s) on that page:

Following thkrueger's advice: from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2162026

1) 1) Download it from : http://152.104.125.41/downloads/down...oads=true#2722 and copy it to your desktop (it's about 12 MB download).

2) Right-click the downloaded file (linux_mac80211_0012.0207.2013.tar.bz2) > "Extract here". This will extract a folder named "rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_88ee_linux_mac80211_001 2.0207.2013" on your desktop. rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_88ee_linux_mac80211_0012.0207.2013

3) Open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run following commands :
Code:

    cd ~/Desktop/rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_88ee_linux_mac80211_0012.0207.2013
    make
    sudo make install

4) Reboot or manually load the driver with -
Code:

    sudo modprobe -v rtl8188ee

When I try that I get errors during make:

    _0012.0207.2013$ sudo make
    [sudo] password for amatern:

Any help with getting that to work? Otherwise I'll try compat as per actionparsnip's message

Your Terminal output shows this:

 Release Date: 05/20/2013
 Manufacturer: TOSHIBA
 Product Name: Satellite C55D-A
 Serial Number: 7D226658Q
 Manufacturer: TOSHIBA
 Product Name: Portable PC

So your hardware is very new and not fully supported yet by the official Ubuntu releases.

However, please read this bugreport:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1096989

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1096989/comments/71

Apparently your wireless adapter only works in the newest daily build of the Ubuntu 13.10 Desktop 64bit (Alpha) .

Ubuntu 13.10 is not supported yet, because it is not released yet.

But you could try booting from the Ubuntu 13.10 Desktop 64bit (Alpha) LiveCD and testing if everything - including wireless - is working using Ubuntu 13.10 Alpha.

Thanks - this has solved my problem, although I couldn't use the Ubuntu daily build, never got to the installer page, instead I used Ubuntu-Gnome-13.10-beta1 and that worked like a charm (so far!)

Thanks for your help...
