/etc/network/interfaces file is customized -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4727] (rev 01) not working with NetworkManager on TOSHIBA Satellite L650 in Ubuntu 13.04

Asked by Sergiu Munteanu

Hello,
Can you please help me to troubleshoot my WiFi network.
Well, situation is simple:
       Computer Toshiba Satelite L650-13N
OS Ubuntu 13.04 run from Hard disk as only OS
The computer is in local network 192.168.0.0
The router 192.168.0.1 has WiFi and LAN for internal network
On the Laptop are two interfaces, FEthernet, and Wifi
At the begining (After clear install) network improperly work when I plug the LAN cable. Sorry but I cannot describe exactly those moments, think it loose connection when plug in the LAN cable. After some try to repair network, LAN are working fine, but Wifi din not work at all.
I run a set of commands from Launchpad(listed below), and Unity show that I have no active connection, but his lie, LAN are working.

The file /etc/network/interfaces:
           # interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
           auto lo
           iface lo inet loopback
           auto eth0
           iface eth0 inet dhcp
#auto eth1 // if I decomment those lines, computer start slow, it show starting without network
           #iface eth1 inet dhcp //

Below are the output for code that I copy paste from instruction on WirelessAskAtLaunchpad

If you configure the interface in /etc/network/interface you will take the control over that adapter away from the network manager in GUI. By default this file should contain only these lines:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

To solve the problem with the WLAN you have several driver options. They are listed at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx .

The contents of your /etc/network/interfaces are incorrect.

The NetworkManager LAN+wireless applet cannot work correctly, if you have customisations in your /etc/network/interfaces file....

So please delete the contents of the file and make sure it ONLY contains the following lines:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Then please try the solution in post #4 (written by edward (ed12al) ) in the following thread:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/234995

Thank you!.

This solution solved my problem.

I restore the default /etc/network/interface and Unity show that network work normally, except Wifi (does not show any available network).
After that I follow the link you provide, and now it is fine.

Thank you again.

a sugestion.
Maybe NetworkManager LAN+wireless applet need to inform users that they have changes with which it cannot work

Yes, that is a good idea.

In any case, the correct use of NetworkManager is already documented here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkManager

I quote:

"
User Settings and System Settings
All the connection configuration files will be stored here.

/etc/NetworkManager
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections
User settings are defined as files in those directories that include specific access controls to limit the access to a specific user.

Issues
If it is not managing your network connections, you'll need to comment out the references to all interfaces (except lo) in /etc/network/interfaces to let Network Manager handle them.

sudo cp /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.bak
sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
It should look similar to this when you are done:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# This is a list of hotpluggable network interfaces.
# They will be activated automatically by the hotplug subsystem.
# auto eth1

# iface eth1 inet dhcp
Then reboot and you should be good to go!

Thank you, very helpful.

By the way, I did not understand why I should install drivers for the wlan?
It is not possible to make this thing a bit simple for linux light users (lusers) :) ?

Or, maybe on first instalation of ubuntu it can show a list of drivers and things that luser need to install/repair/delete to use their computer smoothly.

Good luck!
