UNCLAIMED Wireless Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter [10ec:8176] (rev 01) not working on TOSHIBA SATELLITE C870-156 (PSC8AE-02K002EN) in Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS

Asked by Alastair Newson

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Laptop where the wireless card is not working. Ubuntu is the only install on the PC (not dual boot windows etc). I can't get the wireless network working. I have look around the various common problems but the problem resolutions are quite different & I don't have enough confidence to diagnose the situation here. I've run the commands requested in the Ubuntu Diagnose Wireless Problems page. The results are below,thanks.

Your Terminal output shows the following issue:

[ 21.254871] rtl8192ce:rtl92c_init_sw_vars():<0-0> Failed to request firmware!
[ 21.254876] rtlwifi:rtl_pci_probe():<0-0> Can't init_sw_vars.
[ 21.254908] rtl8192ce 0000:02:00.0: PCI INT A disabled

Apparently, firmware files are missing for your wireless adapter.

I suggest copy-pasting the following commands into the Terminal:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

Then reboot and retest wireless.

It's taken a while sort this out. Needed my time and access to laptop (doing this for a friend) but the soution has worked. I did the second part first (Mark's contribution) that didn't work on reboot. I think did the driver installation and it did then work.

Thank you both for your help.
