Problem installing Ubuntu 12.10

Asked by Armando Quiles

I am reinstalling Ubuntu 12.10 and the installation got stuck in these two errors:

Mar 16 18:15:41 ubuntu kernel: [ 4550.123456] phy0 -> rt2500usb_set_device_state: Error - Device failed to enter state 3 (-16)
Mar 16 18:15:41 ubuntu kernel: [ 4550.123456] phy0 -> rt2500lib_autowakeup: Error - Device failed to wakeup.

These two errors keep repeating indefinitely; only the time and numbers inside the [] change. I read several posts on how to fix the problem but the answers assume that you already have Ubuntu installed. Above the output window there is a label that reads "Running post-installation trigger update-notifier-common" and a "SKIP" button to its right; however, the button is not selectable and the only option is turning the computer off, which I do not want to do to avoid messing up the installation.

What can I do?

Can you please check that the md5 sum of the iso you downloaded matches to the one on the Web?

I will have to stop the installation. I downloaded the rar file to my Windows laptop and moved the file to a USB stick and extracted the files on the USB stick. Then I used the USB stick to boot up my desktop and do the installation. Is it safe to stop the installation?

Do you have any other operating systems installed? if you have backed up everything you need to keep it is safe to do pretty much anything.

Stopping the installation now is probably your only option- it is possible however that it will not boot or you will experience issues.

download the iso image from either http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ (12.04 lts) or http://releases.ubuntu.com/quantal/ (12.10), and burn it to a cd. not sure where you got a rar file from, can you provide a link. the only rar like file is the wubi installer , but that is a tar.gz ...

Could you please provide specs gpu make and model?

Thanks

I recreated the USB files with a new iso file and the universal USB installer from pendrivelinux.com. I did see that it showed the same errors; however, the installation was successfully completed without getting stuck on the errors. I have been t.10 version and noticed the WiFi connection is very bad. It drops at times and when it is up and running is extremely slow. I did see some messages regarding this issue so I will go ahead and try some of the solutions on those posts; otherwise, I will post a new one. I think this issue (error during installation) can be closed since I was able to get past the errors.
